Abstract
This quantitative survey research aimed to assess the effectiveness of examination malpractice control strategies at Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State. A structured questionnaire was meticulously designed and administered to a sample of 120 respondents, comprising students, faculty, and administrators. The study adopted a cross-sectional approach to capture a snapshot of stakeholders' perceptions and experiences. Utilizing SPSS27, the data collected were presented and analyzed, employing t-tests to rigorously test the formulated hypotheses. The findings of this study revealed a significant relationship between the historical effectiveness of current control strategies and the prevalence of malpractice incidents at Federal University Otuoke. The t-test results indicated a statistically significant negative correlation, suggesting that as the effectiveness of strategies increased, the incidence of malpractice decreased. Additionally, the identification of specific challenges within the existing measures was found to contribute significantly to improving the overall effectiveness of these strategies. This positive relationship underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing weaknesses in the control measures to optimize their impact. In conclusion, the study contributes to the body of knowledge on examination malpractice control strategies by offering nuanced insights into stakeholder perceptions. The findings emphasize the need for continuous evaluation, adaptation, and stakeholder collaboration to fortify existing measures. Recommendations include leveraging technology, promoting academic integrity education, and regular policy reviews. The study's limitations, including potential bias in self-reported data and limited generalizability, warrant consideration in future research endeavors. Despite these constraints, the research provides a valuable foundation for institutions seeking to enhance the integrity of their examination systems.

INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background to the Study
Examinations
form a crucial element of the education system, offering a systematic means to
gauge students' understanding and mastery of academic content. However, this
essential process faces a persistent threat globally examination malpractice.
Even Federal University Otuoke in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, grapples with this
issue, making it imperative to explore the dynamics of examination malpractice
and evaluate the effectiveness of strategies implemented to combat it.
Research
conducted by Akanni and Odofin (2015) sheds light on the prevalence of
examination malpractices in Nigerian schools. Their study suggests that one of
the root causes is the overemphasis on one-shot examinations, leading students
to resort to unethical practices. Similarly, Alutu and Aluede (2020) delve into
the perceptions of secondary school students regarding examination malpractices
and ethics, revealing the intricacies of the problem. Understanding the extent
and varied forms of malpractices is crucial for devising targeted strategies to
curb this menace.
Examination
malpractice, including activities such as cheating, impersonation, plagiarism,
and the use of unauthorized materials, poses a significant threat to the
educational system. Adeyemi (2020) explores the impact of leadership styles on
teachers' job performance in secondary schools, emphasizing the role of
administrators in fostering an environment that discourages malpractices. When
malpractices become ingrained, the assessment process is compromised, leading
to distorted academic outcomes that undermine the credibility of the entire
education system.
The
research by Anzene (2014) provides insights into the trends of examination
malpractice in the Nigerian educational system, emphasizing its far-reaching
effects on the socio-economic and political development of the country. The
compromised integrity of examinations not only affects individual students but
also hampers the broader societal progress linked to education.
Federal
University Otuoke, situated in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, is not immune to the
pervasive issue of examination malpractice. The study by Duvie and Eluwa (2016)
specifically assesses the effectiveness of management strategies for curbing
examination malpractices in secondary schools in Nigeria. This research
provides a microcosmic view, allowing us to understand the challenges faced by
an institution in managing and controlling malpractices.
To
combat examination malpractice, educational institutions must adopt effective
strategies. The study by Kagete (2018) on examination malpractices in Kenya
offers insights into the importance of proactive measures. The Kenyan
experience underscores the significance of preventive strategies to address the
root causes of malpractices.
Continuous
Assessment (CA) techniques emerge as a viable alternative, as suggested by
Akanni and Odofin (2015). Their research in Osun State emphasizes the role of
ongoing assessment in reducing malpractices. This aligns with the findings of
Boakye–Adjei (2015), who explores the determinants of non-performing loans in
the Ghanaian banking industry, emphasizing the need for continuous evaluation
and adaptation of strategies to maintain integrity.
The
cost-effectiveness of multi-component interventions to prevent delirium, as
studied by Akunne et al. (2021), provides an analogy for educational
institutions. Investing in a combination of measures tailored to the specific
challenges faced by an institution can yield more sustainable and comprehensive
results.
The
effectiveness of strategies implemented at Federal University Otuoke in
controlling examination malpractice is a topic worthy of exploration. Assessing
historical effectiveness, understanding the challenges and weaknesses within
the existing examination control measures, and proposing evidence-based
recommendations are crucial steps in addressing this issue.
In
essence, examination malpractice poses a significant threat to the integrity of
the education system, impacting institutions globally. Federal University
Otuoke, like many others, faces the challenge of maintaining a fair and
transparent examination system. Research from various perspectives provides
valuable insights into the extent of malpractices, their impact on the
educational system, and effective strategies for control. By assessing
historical effectiveness, identifying challenges, and proposing evidence-based
recommendations, institutions can enhance their examination control measures
and contribute to the broader goal of upholding the integrity of education.
1.2
Statement of Problem
The
issue of examination malpractice presents a pervasive challenge within
educational institutions globally, and Federal University Otuoke in Bayelsa
State, Nigeria, is no exception (Akanni & Odofin, 2015; Alutu & Aluede,
2020). Despite the acknowledgment of this problem, there are notable gaps in
the current understanding that require exploration to formulate effective
strategies for control.
Firstly,
there is a lack of a comprehensive assessment of the historical effectiveness
of existing management strategies for curbing examination malpractices at
Federal University Otuoke (Duvie & Eluwa, 2016). While efforts may have
been made in the past to address malpractices, a critical evaluation of these
initiatives is essential to identify successful approaches and areas requiring
improvement.
Secondly,
there is limited insight into the specific challenges faced by Federal
University Otuoke in managing and controlling examination malpractices. The
existing literature, while acknowledging the prevalence of malpractices (Alutu
& Aluede, 2020), falls short in providing an in-depth analysis of the
unique factors contributing to malpractice within the university context.
Additionally,
the current understanding lacks a nuanced exploration of stakeholders'
perspectives, including students, faculty, and administrative staff, regarding
examination malpractices at Federal University Otuoke. Dzakadzie (2015)
emphasizes the importance of considering stakeholders' attitudes, and their
insights can contribute valuable perspectives for designing effective
interventions.
Furthermore,
there is a need for a detailed examination of the types and patterns of
malpractices occurring at Federal University Otuoke. Understanding the specific
manifestations of malpractices, such as cheating, impersonation, or plagiarism,
is crucial for tailoring interventions to address the root causes and mitigate
their occurrence.
