Abstract
Using a quantitative survey
research design, this study examined the effects of academic stress on the
mental health of nursing students at Benson Idahosa University. Nursing
students from different academic levels made up the sample of 120 responders to
a structured questionnaire that was created and distributed. Using SPSS27, the
acquired data were shown and examined. Descriptive statistics and a one-sample
t-test were used to evaluate the proposed hypotheses. The study's conclusions
showed a strong relationship between nursing students' mental health and
academic stressors. The main causes of academic stress were found to be an
increase in the workload, interpersonal problems, and peer and instructor
pressure.. The negative impacts of academic stress on students' mental health
were also emphasised by the study. These effects included increased anxiety,
emotional distress, disturbed sleep patterns, and decreased appetite. Based on
the findings, it was determined that academic stress has a real effect on the
mental health of nursing students, highlighting the necessity of early
interventions and available resources within educational settings. Stress
management workshops should be implemented, mental health support services
should be improved, work-life balance should be encouraged, supportive learning
environments should be created, mindfulness and relaxation techniques should be
integrated, and regular assessment and feedback mechanisms should be put in
place to track students' progress and satisfaction with support services. This
study adds to the body of knowledge by presenting actual data on the connection
between nursing students' mental health outcomes and academic stress. It also emphasises how crucial holistic
methods are to solving the intricate problems that students encounter in
challenging academic settings. It is recommended that more study be done to
determine the impact of other factors on academic stress as well as the
efficacy of different therapies in fostering students' academic performance and
mental wellness.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background to the Study
Students
in higher education frequently worry about academic stress, particularly in
demanding disciplines like nursing (Basith et al., 2021). The stress that
results from hard schoolwork, clinical rotations, and the need to perform well
academically affects students' mental health (Joseph et al., 2021). The
complete programme that includes continuing examinations, theoretical learning,
and practical clinical skills presents special challenges for nursing students
(Nebhinani et al., 2020). These difficulties are not exclusive to Benson
Idahosa University; they are a common occurrence in other educational
establishments across the world.
Students'
mental health may be severely impacted by the demanding nature of nursing
school (Lin et al., 2020). Nursing students deal with a variety of pressures,
such as the emotional demands of patient care and the heavy workload associated
with their studies (Alsaqri, 2017). Their pressures are made more complex by
the ongoing demand to maintain clinical competency while meeting academic
standards (Yazon et al., 2018). If these pressures are not properly addressed,
nursing students may experience negative effects on their mental health
(Labrague et al., 2018).
Like
other universities, Benson Idahosa University has to acknowledge how critical
it is to help nursing students who are experiencing academic stress (Frost,
2017). The detrimental effects of stress on mental health might impair
students' academic performance and general well-being in the absence of
appropriate support and treatments (Turner & McCarthy, 2017). Thus, it is
critical to comprehend the elements that specifically affect Benson Idahosa
University nursing students' levels of academic stress (Jimenez et al., 2020).
In
order to lessen the negative impacts of academic stress on nursing students'
mental health, effective treatments and support systems are crucial (He et al.,
2018). Students can gain a great deal from techniques like stress management
classes, counselling, and creating a welcoming learning atmosphere (Senturk
& Dogan, 2018). Universities can support positive mental health outcomes
and assist nursing students in better coping with the demands of their
programme by putting these treatments into practice (Pender et al., 2015).
To
put it briefly, Benson Idahosa University nursing students, like all other
nursing students, are quite concerned about academic stress. Supporting their
mental health requires identifying the particular difficulties individuals
encounter and putting focused interventions into place (Lin & Chen, 2019).
Universities can help to create a healthier and more favourable learning
environment for nursing students by proactively tackling academic stress.
1.2
Statement of Problem
Previous
studies have shown several facets of academic stress experienced by nursing
students, such as its origins, mitigation techniques, and effects on
psychological well-being. Still, there are a number of holes that need to be
filled, especially with regard to Benson Idahosa University's nursing students.
While
studies have explored academic stress among nursing students in general
(Nebhinani et al., 2020; Alsaqri, 2017), there is a lack of specific research
focusing on the unique stressors faced by students at Benson Idahosa
University. Understanding these specific stressors is crucial for developing
targeted interventions tailored to the needs of these students.
Furthermore,
while coping techniques have been studied in relation to nursing students'
academic stress (Yazon et al., 2018), nothing is known about how successful
these tactics are at Benson Idahosa University. Examining which coping
strategies work best for these students can yield important information about
how to improve their resilience and general wellbeing.
Furthermore,
although the correlation between unfavourable mental health consequences and
academic stress is widely recognised (Labrague et al., 2018), further in-depth
investigation is required to understand how these consequences materialise
among Benson Idahosa University nursing students. Although they haven't been
fully investigated in this context, elements including institutional policies,
social support networks, and cultural influences may be important.
Furthermore,
it is critical to comprehend how Benson Idahosa University nursing students'
academic performance is affected by academic stress. Although stress can be
detrimental to performance and learning (Turner & McCarthy, 2017), further
research is needed to determine how much of an influence it has in this
particular academic setting.
Thus,
a thorough investigation into the causes of academic stress, coping strategies,
mental health consequences, and their effects on academic performance among
Benson Idahosa University nursing students is obviously needed. Filling in
these gaps will benefit the scholarly literature as well as offer practical
advice for putting in place efficient support and intervention mechanisms.
