Abstract
This study examined the impact of earphone use on the health and social well-being of students at Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State. A quantitative survey research design was adopted to achieve this objective. A structured questionnaire was designed to collect data from 120 respondents, providing insights into their knowledge, ownership, usage patterns, awareness of health and social consequences, and satisfaction levels regarding earphone use. The collected data were presented and analyzed using frequency tables and simple percentages. A one-sample t-test was employed to test the stated hypotheses, with an assumed mean of 0 and a critical table value of 2.92 at a 5% level of significance. The findings revealed that a significant proportion of students had a good understanding of the potential hearing loss caused by prolonged earphone use. Specifically, 48.1% of respondents strongly agreed, and 10.2% agreed that they understood this risk. However, a notable 36.1% strongly disagreed, indicating a divided perception among the students. Additionally, 73.1% of the respondents strongly agreed that they were well-informed about the risk of ear infections associated with improper earphone use. Ownership of earphones was high, with 63.9% of students strongly agreeing that they owned at least one pair of earphones. Daily usage was also significant, with 63.9% of students strongly agreeing to using earphones daily. Awareness of potential social isolation caused by excessive earphone use was high, with 64.8% strongly agreeing. Lastly, 53.7% of students strongly agreed that they were knowledgeable about the possible psychological effects of prolonged earphone use, and 52.8% expressed satisfaction with the sound quality of their earphones. The t-test results supported these findings, rejecting the null hypotheses and indicating significant differences in students' knowledge and awareness levels regarding the consequences of earphone use. Specifically, the t-test showed a significant difference in the level of knowledge regarding the consequences of earphone use among students (t(3) = 14.351, p < 0.05), with a mean difference of 81.5. Additionally, the proportion of students who owned and used earphones was significantly different from 50% (t(3) = 16.467, p < 0.05), with a mean difference of 87.75. Furthermore, students were significantly aware of the potential health and social consequences of earphone use (t(3) = 29.537, p < 0.05), with a mean difference of 96.75. Finally, there was a significant variation in satisfaction levels regarding earphone use among students (t(3) = 18.158, p < 0.05), with a mean difference of 86.25. In conclusion, the study found that while a majority of students at Wellspring University were knowledgeable and aware of the health and social risks associated with earphone use, there remained a significant minority who were either unaware or had misconceptions. The findings highlighted the need for targeted educational programs to address these gaps and promote safer earphone usage practices among students.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The advent of portable music
players and smartphones has revolutionized how individuals consume audio media.
Central to this transformation is the widespread use of earphones, which have
become ubiquitous accessories for students and young adults. Earphones are
portable, convenient, and allow for private listening experiences. However,
their increasing popularity has raised concerns regarding their potential
health risks and impact on social behaviour. This study focuses on assessing
the knowledge, attitude, and consequences of earphone use among students of
Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State.
Earphones provide an escape from
the surrounding environment, allowing users to immerse themselves in music,
podcasts, or other audio content. While they offer benefits such as convenience
and sound quality, prolonged and inappropriate use can lead to several health
issues, including hearing loss, tinnitus, and ear infections. Studies have
shown that exposure to high-volume audio through earphones can cause permanent
damage to the auditory system (Portnuff & Fligor, 2006).
According to the World Health
Organization (WHO), recreational exposure to loud sounds is a significant
contributor to hearing loss worldwide. Their review highlights the increasing
prevalence of hearing impairment among young people due to the widespread use
of personal audio devices (World Health Organization, 2022). It is crucial for
students to be aware of safe listening levels and to limit the duration of
earphone use to prevent long-term auditory damage.
Research indicates that
noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is not only a concern for industrial workers
but also the general population, including students who frequently use
earphones (Nelson et al., 2021). The cumulative effect of daily exposure to
high-decibel sounds can lead to irreversible hearing damage, emphasizing the

been used to evaluate noise-induced hearing loss among young people. These
surveys reveal a high prevalence of hearing damage among frequent users of
personal audio devices, underscoring the need for increased awareness and

guidelines should be applied to recreational noise exposure. Adopting these

1.2 Statement of Problem
The
use of earphones among university students has become a pervasive aspect of

understanding the specific risks posed by the recreational use of earphones,

The

practices. Addressing these gaps will provide a more holistic understanding of
the issue and inform strategies to safeguard the hearing health and social
well-being of university students.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
Main Objective
The
main objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitude of
students and the consequences of earphone use at Wellspring University, Benin
City, Edo State.
Specific Objectives
The specific objectives of this study were:
- To assess the level of knowledge regarding the
consequences of earphone use among students at Wellspring University,
Benin City, Edo State.
- To determine the number of
undergraduate students at Wellspring University who own and use earphones.
- To identify whether Wellspring
University students in Benin City, Edo State, are aware of the
consequences of earphone use.
- To assess the satisfaction
levels regarding earphone use among undergraduates at Wellspring
University, Benin City, Edo State.

is no significant variation in satisfaction levels regarding earphone use among

1.7 Scope of the Study
The
study was confined to undergraduate students at Wellspring University, Benin
City, Edo State. It assessed their knowledge and attitudes towards earphone
use, focusing on the potential health consequences and satisfaction levels. The
study did not include postgraduate students or staff members of the university.
Data collection was conducted over a specific period, and the findings were
based on the responses obtained during that time frame.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
- Earphones: A pair of small listening
devices that are inserted into the ears and connected to a device such as
a smartphone or music player to listen to audio content privately.
- Knowledge: Awareness or understanding of
