Abstract

This study examined the impact of earphone use on the health and social well-being of students at Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State. A quantitative survey research design was adopted to achieve this objective. A structured questionnaire was designed to collect data from 120 respondents, providing insights into their knowledge, ownership, usage patterns, awareness of health and social consequences, and satisfaction levels regarding earphone use. The collected data were presented and analyzed using frequency tables and simple percentages. A one-sample t-test was employed to test the stated hypotheses, with an assumed mean of 0 and a critical table value of 2.92 at a 5% level of significance. The findings revealed that a significant proportion of students had a good understanding of the potential hearing loss caused by prolonged earphone use. Specifically, 48.1% of respondents strongly agreed, and 10.2% agreed that they understood this risk. However, a notable 36.1% strongly disagreed, indicating a divided perception among the students. Additionally, 73.1% of the respondents strongly agreed that they were well-informed about the risk of ear infections associated with improper earphone use. Ownership of earphones was high, with 63.9% of students strongly agreeing that they owned at least one pair of earphones. Daily usage was also significant, with 63.9% of students strongly agreeing to using earphones daily. Awareness of potential social isolation caused by excessive earphone use was high, with 64.8% strongly agreeing. Lastly, 53.7% of students strongly agreed that they were knowledgeable about the possible psychological effects of prolonged earphone use, and 52.8% expressed satisfaction with the sound quality of their earphones. The t-test results supported these findings, rejecting the null hypotheses and indicating significant differences in students' knowledge and awareness levels regarding the consequences of earphone use. Specifically, the t-test showed a significant difference in the level of knowledge regarding the consequences of earphone use among students (t(3) = 14.351, p < 0.05), with a mean difference of 81.5. Additionally, the proportion of students who owned and used earphones was significantly different from 50% (t(3) = 16.467, p < 0.05), with a mean difference of 87.75. Furthermore, students were significantly aware of the potential health and social consequences of earphone use (t(3) = 29.537, p < 0.05), with a mean difference of 96.75. Finally, there was a significant variation in satisfaction levels regarding earphone use among students (t(3) = 18.158, p < 0.05), with a mean difference of 86.25. In conclusion, the study found that while a majority of students at Wellspring University were knowledgeable and aware of the health and social risks associated with earphone use, there remained a significant minority who were either unaware or had misconceptions. The findings highlighted the need for targeted educational programs to address these gaps and promote safer earphone usage practices among students.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The advent of portable music players and smartphones has revolutionized how individuals consume audio media. Central to this transformation is the widespread use of earphones, which have become ubiquitous accessories for students and young adults. Earphones are portable, convenient, and allow for private listening experiences. However, their increasing popularity has raised concerns regarding their potential health risks and impact on social behaviour. This study focuses on assessing the knowledge, attitude, and consequences of earphone use among students of Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State.

Earphones provide an escape from the surrounding environment, allowing users to immerse themselves in music, podcasts, or other audio content. While they offer benefits such as convenience and sound quality, prolonged and inappropriate use can lead to several health issues, including hearing loss, tinnitus, and ear infections. Studies have shown that exposure to high-volume audio through earphones can cause permanent damage to the auditory system (Portnuff & Fligor, 2006).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), recreational exposure to loud sounds is a significant contributor to hearing loss worldwide. Their review highlights the increasing prevalence of hearing impairment among young people due to the widespread use of personal audio devices (World Health Organization, 2022). It is crucial for students to be aware of safe listening levels and to limit the duration of earphone use to prevent long-term auditory damage.

Research indicates that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is not only a concern for industrial workers but also the general population, including students who frequently use earphones (Nelson et al., 2021). The cumulative effect of daily exposure to high-decibel sounds can lead to irreversible hearing damage, emphasizing the need for preventive measures and education on safe listening practices.

The global burden of disabling hearing impairment is substantial, with a significant portion attributed to recreational noise exposure. Public health initiatives must address this issue by promoting awareness and encouraging safer listening habits (Bolajoko et al., 2022). University students, as a high-risk group, should be particularly targeted with educational campaigns on the potential risks associated with excessive earphone use.

Furthermore, earphones can have social implications beyond physical health. Their use can lead to social isolation, as students may become less engaged in face-to-face interactions when immersed in their audio content (Kotby et al., 2020). This detachment can negatively impact their social skills and relationships, highlighting the importance of balancing earphone use with social engagement.

The literature on leisure noise and hearing loss presents a dilemma: while earphones provide a private and enjoyable listening experience, they also pose significant risks to hearing health. Understanding the balance between beneficial and detrimental use of earphones is crucial for promoting healthy habits among university students (Carter et al., 2020).

Continuous and intermittent noise exposure can cause cochlear damage, leading to hearing impairment. This underscores the importance of regulating both the volume and duration of earphone use to protect the auditory system (Pourbakht & Yamsota, 2023). Students should be educated on the risks and encouraged to adopt safer listening practices.

A consensus statement by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) highlights the need for preventive strategies to mitigate noise-induced hearing loss. These strategies include public education campaigns and policy interventions aimed at reducing exposure to harmful noise levels (NIH Consensus Statement, 2020). Universities can play a critical role in disseminating this information to their students.

Studies have documented a decrease in hearing acuity among users of portable headphones, especially those who listen at high volumes for extended periods. This trend is alarming and calls for immediate action to raise awareness about the potential consequences of improper earphone use (Kawada et al., 2020).

Epidemiological evaluations of hearing damage related to amplified music further support the need for intervention. These studies demonstrate a clear link between prolonged exposure to loud music and increased rates of hearing impairment among young adults (Meyer-Bisch, 2020). Educational institutions must prioritize hearing health education to safeguard their students' well-being.

Despite the known risks, personal music players remain popular, and many users are unaware of the dangers associated with high-volume listening. Raising awareness and promoting responsible use are essential to prevent hearing loss (Kapil, 2021). Universities can implement programs to educate students on safe listening practices and the importance of protecting their hearing.

Predicted hearing damage among young people using headphones or earphones is a growing concern. Proactive measures, including regular hearing check-ups and educational initiatives, are necessary to address this issue (Chagok et al., 2022). By fostering a culture of hearing health awareness, universities can help mitigate the risks associated with earphone use.

The effects of earphones on hearing acuity have been studied extensively, with consistent findings indicating that improper use can lead to significant hearing loss. Students should be encouraged to monitor their listening habits and take steps to protect their hearing (Ogbe et al., 2022). Educational campaigns can play a vital role in promoting these behaviours.

Web-based survey techniques have been used to evaluate noise-induced hearing loss among young people. These surveys reveal a high prevalence of hearing damage among frequent users of personal audio devices, underscoring the need for increased awareness and preventive measures (Chung et al., 2021). Universities can leverage these findings to inform their educational programs.

Criteria for occupational noise exposure have been established to protect workers' hearing, but similar guidelines should be applied to recreational noise exposure. Adopting these standards can help reduce the incidence of hearing loss among students who use earphones regularly (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2020). Policy changes and educational efforts are necessary to implement these protections effectively.

1.2 Statement of Problem

The use of earphones among university students has become a pervasive aspect of modern life, yet the potential health and social impacts of this practice remain insufficiently explored. Despite extensive research on noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in occupational settings, there is a significant gap in understanding the specific risks posed by the recreational use of earphones, particularly among young adults in academic environments. Existing studies highlight the dangers of high-volume listening and prolonged use (Portnuff & Fligor, 2006), but there is limited data on how these behaviours specifically affect students' hearing health and social interactions over time.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has underscored the rising incidence of hearing loss due to recreational sound exposure (World Health Organization, 2022), yet there remains a lack of targeted research addressing how knowledge and attitudes towards earphone use influence students' listening habits. Furthermore, while the global burden of disabling hearing impairment has been documented (Bolajoko et al., 2022), there is insufficient localized research focusing on university populations in developing regions such as Nigeria, where cultural and environmental factors may impact earphone use and hearing health outcomes differently.

Social implications of earphone use, including potential isolation and reduced peer engagement, have been noted (Kotby et al., 2020), but empirical data on how these factors affect academic performance and collaborative learning among students is sparse. The balance between the beneficial and detrimental use of earphones remains poorly defined, and there is a pressing need for comprehensive studies that integrate health, behavioural, and educational perspectives.

Moreover, the literature on preventative measures and effective public health interventions tailored to young adults in academic settings is limited (Carter et al., 2020). There is a critical need for research that not only assesses the prevalence and impact of earphone use but also develops and evaluates educational campaigns and policy interventions to promote safe listening practices. Addressing these gaps will provide a more holistic understanding of the issue and inform strategies to safeguard the hearing health and social well-being of university students.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

Main Objective

The main objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitude of students and the consequences of earphone use at Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State.

Specific Objectives

The specific objectives of this study were:

  1. To assess the level of knowledge regarding the consequences of earphone use among students at Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State.
  2. To determine the number of undergraduate students at Wellspring University who own and use earphones.
  3. To identify whether Wellspring University students in Benin City, Edo State, are aware of the consequences of earphone use.
  4. To assess the satisfaction levels regarding earphone use among undergraduates at Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State.

1.4 Research Questions

To guide this study, the following research questions were formulated:

  1. What is the level of knowledge regarding the consequences of earphone use among students at Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State?
  2. How many undergraduate students at Wellspring University own and use earphones?
  3. Are students at Wellspring University aware of the potential health and social consequences of earphone use?
  4. What are the satisfaction levels regarding earphone use among undergraduates at Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Based on the research questions, the following hypotheses were proposed:

1. There is no significant difference in the level of knowledge regarding the consequences of earphone use among students at Wellspring University.

2. The proportion of undergraduate students at Wellspring University who own and use earphones is not significantly different from 50%.

3. Students at Wellspring University are not significantly aware of the potential health and social consequences of earphone use.

4. There is no significant variation in satisfaction levels regarding earphone use among undergraduates at Wellspring University.

1.6 Significance of the Study

In addition, the study has the potential to influence the design and marketing of earphones and personal listening devices. Manufacturers can use the findings to develop products that prioritize user safety, such as devices with automatic volume-limiting features or educational materials that inform consumers about safe listening levels.

Overall, this study is significant in its potential to impact multiple aspects of student life and well-being at Wellspring University and beyond. By shedding light on the knowledge, attitudes, and consequences of earphone use, it aims to foster healthier, more informed behaviours that support both individual health and community well-being.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study was confined to undergraduate students at Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State. It assessed their knowledge and attitudes towards earphone use, focusing on the potential health consequences and satisfaction levels. The study did not include postgraduate students or staff members of the university. Data collection was conducted over a specific period, and the findings were based on the responses obtained during that time frame.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Earphones: A pair of small listening devices that are inserted into the ears and connected to a device such as a smartphone or music player to listen to audio content privately.
  2. Knowledge: Awareness or understanding of information related to the potential health consequences and risks associated with earphone use.
