INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background to the Study
Occupational
stress is a complex issue affecting professionals across various fields, and
the academic sector is no exception (Drabick et al., 2021; Duman et al., 2018).
The University of Calabar, being a prominent institution of higher learning,
faces the challenges posed by occupational stress among its academic staff, who
are crucial in shaping the educational landscape and guiding the next
generation of leaders (Adenuga, 2021; Ene et al., 2021). This essay explores
the pervasive nature of occupational stress in the academic sector and
emphasizes the importance of understanding and addressing this issue for the
well-being of individuals and the overall quality of education.
The
academic environment is known for its demanding nature, characterized by tight
deadlines, high workloads, and the constant pursuit of excellence (Aina &
Adeleke, 2018; Akporehe, 2021). Academic staff at the University of Calabar,
like their counterparts in other institutions, often find themselves under
considerable pressure to meet academic and research expectations. The
continuous demand for research output, grant applications, and publication
targets can contribute significantly to the stress experienced by these
educators (Aderibigbe et al., 2020; Amalu, 2020).
The
University of Calabar, being a center for academic excellence, places high
expectations on its faculty to maintain rigorous academic standards. This
pressure is exacerbated by factors such as limited resources, administrative
demands, and the need to balance teaching, research, and administrative
responsibilities (Agba & Ocheni, 2017; Ahmad et al., 2019). The weight of
these expectations can manifest as occupational stress among academic staff,
impacting their mental and physical well-being (Aduma et al., 2022).
In
addition to external pressures, internal factors within the academic community
can contribute to stress among faculty members. Interpersonal conflicts,
competition for resources, and challenges in collaboration can create a tense
work environment (Akinmayowa & Kadiri, 2014; Archibong et al., 2020). The
University of Calabar, like many institutions, must recognize and address these
internal stressors to foster a supportive and collaborative academic community.
The
consequences of unmanaged occupational stress among academic staff are not
limited to individual well-being but extend to the overall performance and
reputation of the institution (Aro et al., 2019; Babagana & Dungus, 2021).
Stressed and burnt-out educators may experience decreased job satisfaction,
leading to a decline in the quality of teaching and reduced enthusiasm for
research (Balducci et al., 2021; Breitenbach et al., 2021). This, in turn, can
impact student learning outcomes and hinder the university's ability to attract
and retain high-caliber faculty members.
Recognizing
the significance of addressing occupational stress among academic staff, the
University of Calabar can implement measures to mitigate its impact. Providing
professional development opportunities that focus on stress management and
resilience (Gabr et al., 2021; Goodday & Friend, 2019) can equip educators
with coping mechanisms and strategies to navigate the challenges of their
roles. Additionally, creating a supportive work culture that encourages open
communication, collaboration, and work-life balance is crucial for promoting
mental well-being (Hafeez et al., 2019; Hegmann, 2020).
In
response to the unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the
University of Calabar, like other institutions globally, must address the
specific stressors introduced by remote work and changes in teaching modalities
(Ignjatović et al., 2020; Isa & Yusoff, 2015). The university could
implement flexible policies, technological support, and mental health resources
to help academic staff adapt to the evolving academic landscape.
Research
has shown that workload and competence significantly influence employee
performance (Fadlurrahman et al., 2021; Johari et al., 2018). The University of
Calabar can consider workload distribution strategies, ensuring that faculty
members are not overwhelmed with excessive responsibilities. Recognizing and
rewarding competence through acknowledgment of achievements, grants, and
sabbatical opportunities can further motivate academic staff.
1.2
Statement of Problem
The
academic sector, including the University of Calabar, faces persistent
challenges related to occupational stress among its academic staff. While
various studies have explored the impact of occupational stress in different
contexts (Adenuga, 2021; Duman et al., 2018), there remains a notable gap in
understanding the specific stressors and coping mechanisms within the unique
environment of the University of Calabar.
One
key aspect that requires attention is the university's role as a center for
academic excellence, which often translates into high expectations and
demanding workloads for its faculty members (Akter & Husain, 2016; Agba
& Ocheni, 2017). Existing research has highlighted the prevalence of
stressors such as research demands, administrative responsibilities, and
limited resources (Aina & Adeleke, 2018; Archibong et al., 2020). However,
a more nuanced exploration is needed to identify the intricacies of these
stressors at the University of Calabar and their unique impact on academic
staff.
Furthermore,
the recent global events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, have introduced
unprecedented challenges to the academic sector, necessitating an investigation
into how these external factors have intensified occupational stress among
faculty members (Gabr et al., 2021; Ignjatović et al., 2020). The shift to
remote work, changes in teaching modalities, and increased reliance on
technology have created novel stressors that require specific attention in the
university's context.
Interpersonal
dynamics within the academic community also play a crucial role in contributing
to or alleviating occupational stress (Akinmayowa & Kadiri, 2014; Brondino
et al., 2022). Research has acknowledged the impact of competition,
collaboration challenges, and conflicts on faculty stress levels, but a more
focused exploration is needed to identify effective strategies for promoting a
supportive work culture within the University of Calabar.
