Abstract
This
study examined the role of technology in nursing and its impact on patient
safety at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City. A
cross-sectional survey research design was adopted to gather data on technology
utilization, its influence on patient safety outcomes, and challenges faced by
nurses in effectively using healthcare technology. A structured questionnaire
was developed and administered to a sample of 448 nurses working at UBTH. The
collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 27, where descriptive
statistics were employed to present the demographic distribution and response
patterns, while a one-sample t-test was used to test the stated hypotheses
regarding relationships between technology use, patient safety, and challenges
in technology adoption. The findings revealed that nurses at UBTH frequently
used technology in their daily practice and expressed confidence in operating
technological tools provided by the hospital. Technology was found to
positively influence patient safety by reducing medication errors, enabling
timely patient monitoring, and improving communication among healthcare teams.
However, several challenges were identified, including inadequate training,
frequent technical problems, high workload, and limited organizational support,
which hindered the effective use of technology. The t-test results confirmed
significant relationships between technology use and improved patient safety
outcomes, as well as between the extent of technology utilization and the
challenges encountered by nurses. The study concluded that technology plays a
critical role in enhancing nursing practice and patient safety at UBTH, but its
full potential remains constrained by operational and institutional barriers.
Recommendations were made to improve nurse training, technical support,
organizational policies, and workload management to optimize technology
adoption and improve healthcare delivery. Overall, the study contributed
valuable insights into the integration of technology in nursing within a
Nigerian healthcare context.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
to the Study
The rapid evolution of
technology in healthcare has significantly transformed nursing practices
worldwide. Over recent decades, technological advancements have reshaped the
healthcare landscape, fostering improvements in patient care quality and
safety. Nursing, a critical component of healthcare delivery, has benefited
immensely from the integration of advanced technologies that streamline
processes, enhance communication, and facilitate clinical decision-making.
These technologies include electronic health records (EHR), patient monitoring
systems, medication administration technologies, virtual simulations, and
telehealth services, all of which contribute to better clinical outcomes and
safer patient environments (Shorey & Ng, 2021; Walker et al., 2020).
Electronic health records, for
example, serve as comprehensive digital repositories of patient information
that enable nurses and other healthcare professionals to access real-time data,
thereby improving the accuracy of documentation and reducing errors related to
patient information management (Momenipur & Pennathur, 2019). Similarly,
patient monitoring technologies allow continuous tracking of vital signs,
facilitating timely interventions and reducing the likelihood of adverse events
(Saleem & Khan, 2023). Medication administration technologies, such as
barcode scanning and automated dispensing systems, have been instrumental in
mitigating medication errors, which remain a significant threat to patient
safety worldwide (Sarfati et al., 2019).
Moreover, virtual reality (VR)
and simulation-based training have revolutionized nursing education and
clinical preparedness, enabling nurses to acquire and refine skills in a
controlled, risk-free environment before direct patient care (Chernikova et al.,
2020; Shorey & Ng, 2021). These technologies support nurses’ competence and
confidence, which are vital in ensuring patient safety and effective care
delivery (Smart et al., 2020). The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) also
holds promise for enhancing clinical decision support, predicting patient
risks, and personalizing care (Davenport & Kalakota, 2019; Buchanan et al.,
2021).
The University of Benin Teaching
Hospital (UBTH), located in Benin City, Nigeria, stands as one of the foremost
healthcare institutions in the region, renowned for delivering specialized
medical services across numerous disciplines. UBTH has progressively
incorporated various technological tools within its nursing departments, aiming
to optimize patient care and safety. However, the effective integration of
technology in nursing practice is not solely dependent on the availability of
tools but is equally influenced by the nurses’ competence, attitudes towards
technology, and the level of organizational support for technology adoption
(Abu Talib et al., 2021; Olorunfemi et al., 2024).
In the context of UBTH, nurses
are required to adapt to rapidly evolving technological demands while managing
routine clinical responsibilities. The successful implementation of
technological solutions in nursing care depends on comprehensive training programs,
adequate infrastructure, and supportive policies that encourage acceptance and
proficient use of these tools (Rosenbusch, 2020; Mlambo et al., 2021). Without
such support, there is a risk of underutilization or misuse of technology,
which can negate its potential benefits and even contribute to patient safety
risks.
Globally, patient safety remains
a paramount challenge in healthcare delivery, with adverse events contributing
to significant morbidity and mortality. The World Health Organization (WHO)
estimates that millions of deaths each year result from preventable medical
errors and unsafe healthcare practices (World Health Organization, 2021). In
low- and middle-income countries, such as Nigeria, the burden of patient safety
incidents is exacerbated by resource constraints, infrastructural deficits, and
gaps in healthcare workers' training (Abu Talib et al., 2021). Therefore, the
integration of effective technological interventions in nursing care becomes
crucial in mitigating risks and enhancing safety outcomes.
Technology in nursing is
designed to address common sources of patient safety threats, including
medication errors, hospital-acquired infections, and communication breakdowns
among healthcare teams. For instance, medication errors, one of the leading causes
of preventable harm, can be reduced through the use of barcode medication
administration and automated alert systems that provide real-time verification
and reminders to nurses during drug delivery (Sarfati et al., 2019; Saleem
& Khan, 2023). Similarly, infection control can be supported through
electronic surveillance systems and automated reminders for hygiene protocols,
reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections (Archibald & Barnard,
2024).
The application of technology
also extends to improving communication between healthcare providers and
patients, a factor strongly linked to patient safety. Electronic communication
platforms and telehealth services enable prompt sharing of patient information
and consultation, thereby reducing delays in care and minimizing errors related
to miscommunication (Smart et al., 2020; Castonguay et al., 2023). This is
especially pertinent in settings like UBTH, where high patient loads and
complex cases demand efficient information flow and coordination among
multidisciplinary teams.
However, despite the evident
advantages of technology in nursing, challenges persist that may hinder its
optimal use. Studies have highlighted barriers such as insufficient training,
resistance to change, infrastructural inadequacies, and the complexity of some
technological systems (Chernikova et al., 2020; Abu Talib et al., 2021). In
UBTH and similar healthcare settings, these challenges can limit the impact of
technological tools on patient safety, underscoring the need for targeted
assessments and interventions to enhance nurses’ technological proficiency and
acceptance (Olorunfemi et al., 2024).
Furthermore, the ethical
implications of technology use in nursing, such as data privacy, informed
consent, and the potential for dehumanization of care, must also be considered.
Carebots and AI-driven tools, while promising, raise questions about sustaining
the fundamental ideals of nursing care in the digital age (Vallor, 2021;
Archibald & Barnard, 2024). Ensuring that technology complements rather
than replaces the empathetic and personalized nature of nursing care is
critical for both patient safety and quality of care.
In the Nigerian healthcare
context, where UBTH operates, the increasing adoption of technology in nursing
is aligned with global trends but must be adapted to local realities. The need
for continuous professional development, infrastructural upgrades, and
supportive policies cannot be overstated. Research focusing on UBTH provides an
opportunity to examine the interplay between technology and nursing within a
real-world clinical setting and to generate evidence on the actual impact on
patient safety.
1.2 Statement of
the Problem
Despite the widespread
recognition of technology’s transformative potential in nursing practice,
significant challenges remain in realizing its full benefits for patient
safety, particularly in low- and middle-income healthcare settings like the
University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). While technological tools such as
electronic health records (EHR), patient monitoring systems, and
simulation-based training have been shown to improve nursing efficiency and
reduce medical errors globally (Walker et al., 2020; Sarfati et al., 2019;
Chernikova et al., 2020), their actual impact in Nigerian healthcare
institutions remains underexplored. This gap is concerning given the high rates
of preventable adverse events linked to human errors in hospitals (World Health
Organization, 2021).
At UBTH, although various
technological interventions have been introduced to support nursing care, there
is limited empirical evidence on how effectively these tools have been
integrated into nursing workflows and how they influence patient safety outcomes.
Existing studies in similar contexts have primarily focused on technology
adoption from a general perspective, neglecting the specific factors that
affect nurses’ competence, attitudes, and organizational support, which are
critical for successful technology use (Olorunfemi et al., 2024; Abu Talib et
al., 2021). Without understanding these factors, hospitals risk underutilizing
technology or facing unintended negative consequences, such as increased
documentation burden or workflow disruptions (Momenipur & Pennathur, 2019;
Rosenbusch, 2020).
Furthermore, while simulation
and virtual reality have been documented to enhance nursing education and
preparedness internationally (Shorey & Ng, 2021; Saleem & Khan, 2023),
there is a paucity of data on their adoption and effectiveness within UBTH. The
potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to augment nursing care and patient
safety is well-recognized globally (Davenport & Kalakota, 2019; Buchanan et
al., 2021), yet its practical implementation and impact remain
under-investigated in Nigerian clinical settings. This leaves a gap in
understanding how emerging technologies can be ethically and effectively
integrated into routine nursing care at UBTH (Vallor, 2021).
Moreover, current research often
overlooks the contextual challenges unique to Nigerian healthcare institutions,
such as limited infrastructure, resource constraints, and cultural attitudes toward
technology adoption among nurses (Abu Talib et al., 2021). There is a need for
localized, empirical assessments that consider these factors to guide policy
and practice.
In summary, while the benefits
of technology in nursing for enhancing patient safety are well-documented,
significant gaps persist regarding the real-world application, nurse readiness,
and contextual barriers at UBTH. This study seeks to fill these gaps by
assessing the integration of technology in nursing at UBTH and its actual
impact on patient safety, thereby informing strategies for effective technology
adoption and improved healthcare outcomes.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The primary
objective of this study is to assess the role of technology in nursing and its
impact on patient safety at UBTH, Benin City. The specific objectives include:
- To
evaluate the extent of technology utilization by nurses in UBTH for
patient care.
- To examine the impact of technology use on the safety
of patients in the hospital.
- To identify the challenges faced by nurses in adopting
and using healthcare technology effectively.
1.4 Research Questions
The study will be guided by the
following research questions:
- To what extent do nurses at UBTH utilize technology in
their nursing practice?
- How does the use of technology in nursing influence
patient safety outcomes at UBTH?
- What are the barriers and challenges that affect
nurses’ effective use of technology in UBTH?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following hypotheses will be
tested in this study:
- H0: There is no significant relationship between
technology use in nursing and patient safety at UBTH.
H1: There is a significant relationship between technology use in nursing and patient safety at UBTH. - H0: The extent of technology utilization by nurses does
not significantly affect patient safety outcomes in UBTH.

1.6 Significance
of the Study
This study holds substantial
importance for various stakeholders within the healthcare sector, particularly
at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) and similar healthcare
institutions. For UBTH, the findings will provide critical insights into how
technology is currently integrated into nursing practice and its direct impact
on patient safety. These insights will help hospital management identify gaps
in technology use and areas where improvements are needed. With a clearer
understanding of how nurses interact with and utilize technology, hospital administrators
will be better positioned to make informed decisions about investing in
appropriate technological tools that can enhance nursing workflows and
ultimately improve patient care outcomes.
Additionally, the study will
serve as a foundation for developing effective training and capacity-building
programs tailored specifically for nurses. As healthcare continues to evolve
with increasing reliance on digital tools such as electronic health records,
patient monitoring systems, and simulation technologies, it becomes essential
for nurses to develop and maintain technological competence. The research
underscores the need for continuous professional development to equip nurses
with the necessary skills and confidence to effectively use these tools. This,
in turn, can reduce errors linked to improper technology use and improve
overall patient safety.
On a broader scale, this study
offers valuable information for policymakers and healthcare planners
responsible for shaping the future of healthcare delivery. The findings can
inform the creation of policies and strategic plans that encourage and support
the integration of technology into nursing care, particularly in tertiary
healthcare institutions across Nigeria. By understanding the challenges and
opportunities related to technology adoption, policymakers can address
infrastructural and organizational barriers and foster an environment conducive
to technological advancement.
Most importantly, the ultimate
beneficiaries of this study are the patients. Improved technology use in
nursing leads to safer healthcare practices, reducing preventable medical
errors and adverse events that contribute to patient morbidity and mortality.
Enhanced safety and efficiency in nursing care will improve patient
satisfaction and trust in healthcare services. This study, therefore,
contributes significantly to advancing quality, patient-centered care and
supports efforts to promote safer and more effective healthcare delivery within
UBTH and beyond.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The
scope of this study is confined to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital
(UBTH), located in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. The study focuses on nurses
employed in various departments of UBTH who utilize technology in their daily
nursing practice. The technological aspects assessed will include electronic
health records, patient monitoring systems, medication administration
technologies, and communication tools used in nursing care.
The
research covers the impact of these technologies on patient safety indicators
such as error rates, infection control, and timely care delivery. The study
will also explore challenges faced by nurses concerning technology use.
However, it will not extensively cover other healthcare workers or
non-technological factors affecting patient safety.
