Abstract

The study investigated the efficiency of e-procurement in enhancing profitability in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Kaduna State, Nigeria. A correlational research design was used, where a structured questionnaire was distributed to a sample of 133 respondents from selected SMEs. The data were analyzed using frequency tables, simple percentages for descriptive analysis, while regression analysis, ANOVA estimates, and F-tests were employed to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed that e-procurement adoption and procurement efficiency did not significantly influence the profitability of SMEs in Kaduna. The regression analysis showed that e-procurement adoption had a p-value of 0.603, indicating no significant relationship between e-procurement and profitability. Similarly, procurement efficiency also failed to show a significant impact on profitability, with a p-value of 0.622. The ANOVA results further confirmed this, as the overall model produced a p-value of 0.488, which was above the significance level of 0.05. This suggested that other factors, beyond procurement efficiency, might be more influential in determining profitability for SMEs. The lack of significant findings may be attributed to various challenges faced by SMEs in Kaduna. Many SMEs still struggle with poor technological infrastructure, limited financial resources, and insufficient training for employees, all of which hinder the effective implementation of e-procurement systems. Moreover, while procurement efficiency can theoretically lead to cost savings, these savings may not be sufficient to generate increased profitability in the face of other pressing business challenges such as limited access to capital, high competition, and fluctuating market conditions. In conclusion, while e-procurement and procurement efficiency are crucial for improving operational processes, their direct impact on profitability was found to be minimal in the SMEs in Kaduna. The study recommended improving technological infrastructure, providing training for employees, and addressing broader business challenges through strategic investments. Furthermore, future research should focus on exploring other factors influencing profitability, such as access to finance and market conditions, to gain a deeper understanding of the factors that drive profitability in SMEs.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a critical role in economic development and job creation. In Nigeria, SMEs contribute significantly to the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), providing employment opportunities and fostering innovation. The challenges faced by SMEs are multifaceted, including limited access to finance, high operational costs, and inefficient procurement processes (Aluko et al., 2017). Addressing these challenges is crucial for fostering a conducive environment for SME growth, which, in turn, enhances national economic stability and resilience.

E-procurement has emerged as a transformative solution that leverages technology to enhance the procurement process. It refers to the electronic management of procurement activities, including sourcing, purchasing, and supplier management, through digital platforms. The adoption of e-procurement can streamline operations, reduce costs, and improve overall efficiency, thereby enhancing the profitability of SMEs (Banerjee et al., 2019). By digitizing procurement processes, SMEs can effectively mitigate the inefficiencies associated with traditional procurement methods, which are often cumbersome and prone to errors.

In Kaduna State, the utilization of e-procurement systems among SMEs is gaining traction, particularly in response to the growing demand for transparency, accountability, and efficiency in procurement. Implementing e-procurement allows SMEs to optimize their purchasing processes, minimize paperwork, and establish better relationships with suppliers (Bautista et al., 2019). This digital transformation not only enhances operational efficiency but also fosters a culture of trust between SMEs and their suppliers, which is essential for long-term business relationships.

Furthermore, e-procurement can enhance collaboration within supply chains, promoting better coordination among stakeholders involved in the procurement process (Brigham et al., 2017). Enhanced collaboration can lead to improved supply chain performance, which is particularly important in a developing economy like Nigeria, where SMEs often struggle with logistical challenges and market volatility (de Mattos et al., 2018). By adopting e-procurement, SMEs can create more resilient supply chains capable of adapting to changes in market conditions.

Despite the benefits of e-procurement, the implementation process can present challenges. SMEs in Nigeria often grapple with limited technological infrastructure and a lack of skilled personnel to manage e-procurement systems effectively (de Oliveira et al., 2019). Additionally, regulatory complexities may hinder the seamless adoption of e-procurement solutions (Gomez-Lopez et al., 2021). Addressing these challenges requires targeted interventions from both the government and private sector to facilitate the necessary training and infrastructure development.

Moreover, the successful implementation of e-procurement systems can contribute significantly to enhancing the competitiveness of SMEs in Nigeria (Gutierrez et al., 2022). As SMEs adopt more efficient procurement practices, they can reduce costs and improve their responsiveness to market demands, ultimately leading to increased market share and profitability. The ability to leverage technology in procurement processes also positions SMEs favorably in the digital economy, where speed and efficiency are paramount.

The role of government in supporting the transition to e-procurement among SMEs cannot be overstated. By providing incentives and establishing supportive policies, the government can facilitate the adoption of e-procurement technologies, enabling SMEs to compete effectively in both local and global markets (Jansen & Conti, 2018). Furthermore, initiatives that promote digital literacy and skills development among SME owners and employees will play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability of e-procurement systems.

As SMEs increasingly adopt e-procurement solutions, the potential for innovation within these enterprises also rises (Jones & Stevens, 2019). By leveraging technology to improve procurement processes, SMEs can allocate resources more effectively towards research and development, product improvement, and customer service. This shift towards innovation is essential for the long-term growth and sustainability of SMEs, particularly in an ever-competitive business environment.

1.2 Statement of Problem

Despite the significant role that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play in Nigeria's economic landscape, particularly in job creation and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution, they continue to face substantial challenges, particularly in procurement processes (Aluko et al., 2017). Traditional procurement methods, often characterized by inefficiencies and high operational costs, have hindered the growth and profitability of these enterprises (Banerjee et al., 2019). Although some studies have examined the challenges faced by SMEs in Nigeria, there is limited research specifically focusing on the adoption and impact of e-procurement systems as a solution to these challenges.

Existing literature highlights the importance of e-procurement in streamlining operations and enhancing efficiency (Bautista et al., 2019; Gutierrez et al., 2022). However, there is a notable gap in empirical research that quantitatively assesses the effectiveness of e-procurement in improving profitability and operational efficiency among SMEs in Kaduna State. Most prior studies have either focused on larger enterprises or have not delved deeply into the specific challenges SMEs face in adopting digital procurement technologies (de Oliveira et al., 2019).

Additionally, while some research has addressed the technological barriers to e-procurement implementation, it often overlooks the critical factors such as training, infrastructure, and regulatory environments that may influence SMEs' adoption of e-procurement systems (Gomez-Lopez et al., 2021). Furthermore, the existing studies predominantly emphasize qualitative insights rather than robust quantitative analyses that can provide actionable data for SME stakeholders and policymakers (Karanja et al., 2019). This study aims to fill these gaps by conducting a comprehensive assessment of the efficiency of e-procurement in enhancing profitability among selected SMEs in Kaduna, Nigeria.
