Abstract
This study employed a quantitative survey
research design to examine consumers’ perceptions and beliefs about heavy metal
and pesticide residues in cucumbers, along with their level of awareness
concerning the potential health risks linked to consuming contaminated
cucumbers. A structured questionnaire was developed to gather data from a
sample of 120 respondents. The collected data was presented and analyzed using
SPSS version 27, while a t-test was applied to evaluate the stated hypotheses.
The findings of the study showed that a considerable percentage of respondents
held reservations or expressed uncertainty regarding heavy metal contamination
in cucumbers. With respect to the safety of cucumbers they had consumed over
the past year, a large proportion of respondents either “Strongly Agree” or
“Agree” that the cucumbers were free from heavy metal contamination.
Nevertheless, a notable percentage still voiced reservations or uncertainty
about the possibility of heavy metal contamination in cucumbers.
Based
on these findings, it is recommended that consumers wash cucumbers thoroughly
before eating them to eliminate any dirt or contaminants; purchase cucumbers
from trustworthy sources that adhere to good agricultural practices and have a
proven record of supplying safe and healthy produce; refrain from consuming
cucumbers that look damaged or bruised, as they may be more prone to
contamination; store cucumbers appropriately in a cool, dry environment to
avoid spoilage and contamination; think about cultivating their own cucumbers
using organic methods to guarantee their safety; remain conscious of the
dangers posed by heavy metal contamination and implement measures to reduce
their exposure to these contaminants; keep themselves updated on food safety matters
by consulting current information from reliable sources; notify the appropriate
authorities about any suspected instances of food contamination to help stop
additional outbreaks; motivate others to prioritize food safety by distributing
information and resources on the subject; and push for more robust food safety
regulations to shield consumers from dangerous contaminants.
