INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background to the Study
Drug
abuse among adolescents and young adults is a global concern with far-reaching
consequences on individuals, families, communities, and society at large
(Guwira, 2017). It is not just a health problem but also a social, economic,
and legal issue that requires concerted efforts to address (Eneh &
Nkamnebe, 2021). In Nigeria, like in many other countries, drug abuse among
senior secondary school students has become a growing concern (Chikoko, 2023).
This issue is particularly prevalent in communities such as Uromi, Edo State,
where factors contributing to drug abuse need to be thoroughly understood
(Gudyanga, Gora, & Moyo, 2019).
Uromi
Community Secondary School, located in Uromi, Edo State, has witnessed an
increase in drug abuse cases among its senior secondary school students
(Creswell, 2019). This alarming trend has prompted the need for a comprehensive
study to explore the underlying factors contributing to this phenomenon
(Manguvo, Whitney, & Chareka, 2021). By delving into these factors,
educators, policymakers, parents, and relevant stakeholders can better
understand the dynamics of drug abuse in this specific context (Konyana &
Motalenyane, 2022). Implementing targeted interventions becomes crucial based
on these insights (Chireshe, 2023).
Various
socio-economic factors play a role in the increasing cases of drug abuse among
senior secondary school students in Uromi Community Secondary School
(Drazdowski et al., 2022). Factors such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of
access to education and opportunities contribute to vulnerability among
students (Kahuthia-Gathu et al., 2023). Peer influence also plays a significant
role, as students often emulate behaviors observed within their social circles
(Gotsang, Mashalla, & Seloilwe, 2017). Understanding these influences is
vital for designing effective prevention strategies.
Furthermore,
the awareness and effectiveness of existing drug abuse prevention programs
within Uromi Community Secondary School need to be evaluated (Cross &
Papadopoulos, 2021). This assessment can provide insights into gaps in current
initiatives and areas for improvement (Chireshe, 2022). Additionally, exploring
the experiences and perceptions of vulnerable students regarding drug abuse can
inform targeted interventions (Chidarikire, Chikuvadze, & Muza, 2021). Peer
counseling programs may play a crucial role in mitigating drug abuse among
students (Chikuvadze, Chidarikire, & Mbawuya, 2022).
Addressing
drug abuse among senior secondary school students requires a multi-dimensional
approach that considers not only individual risk factors but also broader
social and environmental influences (Huba & Bentler, 2020). Collaboration
among stakeholders such as schools, families, community organizations, and
government agencies is essential (Makombe, 2021). Providing comprehensive
education on the risks of drug abuse and promoting healthy coping mechanisms
can empower students to make informed choices (Lochman, 2022). Moreover,
interventions should address underlying issues such as mental health challenges
that may contribute to substance misuse (Marlatt et al., 2022).
In
conclusion, drug abuse among senior secondary school students in Uromi, Edo
State, reflects a larger societal issue that demands coordinated efforts and
evidence-based interventions. Understanding the complex interplay of
socio-economic factors, peer influence, and the effectiveness of prevention
programs is crucial for developing targeted strategies. By addressing these
factors comprehensively, stakeholders can work towards mitigating the impact of
drug abuse and promoting the well-being of students and communities.
1.2
Statement of Problem
The
issue of drug abuse among senior secondary school students in Uromi Community
Secondary School, Edo State, presents several gaps and challenges that need to
be addressed through focused research and interventions. Firstly, while there
is recognition of the increasing prevalence of drug abuse in this setting
(Creswell, 2019), there is limited understanding of the specific socio-economic
factors contributing to this trend (Drazdowski et al., 2022). This gap hinders
the development of targeted prevention strategies that address the root causes
of substance misuse among students.
Secondly,
the role of peer influence in perpetuating drug abuse remains understudied
within the context of Uromi Community Secondary School (Gotsang, Mashalla,
& Seloilwe, 2017). Peer dynamics and social pressures can significantly
impact students' attitudes and behaviors towards substance use (Chikuvadze,
Chidarikire, & Mbawuya, 2022), yet there is a need for in-depth research to
understand these influences better.
Furthermore,
the effectiveness of existing drug abuse prevention programs within the school
requires evaluation (Cross & Papadopoulos, 2021). While interventions may
be in place, their impact and reach in mitigating drug abuse among students
remain uncertain (Chireshe, 2022). This gap highlights the necessity of
assessing program awareness, implementation fidelity, and outcomes to determine
areas for improvement and optimization.
Additionally,
the experiences and perspectives of vulnerable students regarding drug abuse
have not been adequately explored in the context of Uromi Community Secondary
School (Chidarikire, Chikuvadze, & Muza, 2021). Understanding the unique
challenges faced by these students can inform targeted support mechanisms and
tailored interventions that address their specific needs.
