Abstract
This quantitative
survey research aimed to explore the dynamics of family planning among women of
childbearing age in Abbi Primary Health Care Centers. A structured
questionnaire was meticulously designed and administered to a sample of 120
respondents, selected through a convenient sampling technique. The survey
encompassed aspects of awareness, cultural influences, socioeconomic factors,
and the perceived impact of family planning. The collected data were then
processed and analyzed using SPSS27, employing statistical tools such as
t-tests to rigorously test the stated hypotheses. The findings revealed nuanced
insights into the community's awareness levels, cultural influences, and the
socioeconomic factors affecting the utilization of family planning services.
While the null hypotheses were retained, indicating no statistically
significant associations, the study identified specific challenges and cultural
influences that hinder family planning adoption. Additionally, the research
underscored the need for targeted interventions to enhance awareness and
address cultural nuances for more effective family planning programs in Abbi
Primary Health Care Centers. In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive
understanding of family planning dynamics in the context of Abbi Primary Health
Care Centers. The quantitative survey design, coupled with robust statistical
analyses, offered a methodologically sound exploration of the factors
influencing family planning practices. The findings contribute valuable insights
to the existing body of knowledge, informing policymakers, healthcare
practitioners, and researchers. Recommendations include enhancing educational
campaigns, community sensitization programs, and ensuring accessible and
affordable family planning services. These findings, grounded in statistical
evidence, offer actionable strategies for improving family planning initiatives
and reproductive health outcomes in similar settings.

INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background to the Study
Family
planning is a critical component of public health strategies, contributing
significantly to the overall well-being of individuals, families, and
societies. Anasel and Mlinga (2022) emphasize that family planning involves a
conscious effort to regulate and control the number and spacing of children
within a family. This practice holds far-reaching implications for the
physical, emotional, and economic aspects of individuals and communities. The
Abbi Primary Health Care Centers in Ndukwa West Local Government play a crucial
role in addressing reproductive health issues among women of childbearing age,
making family planning a central focus in promoting the health and welfare of
the community (Anasel & Mlinga, 2022; Starbird et al., 2020).
In
the specific context of Abbi Primary Health Care Centers, understanding the
impact of family planning among women of childbearing age is of paramount
importance. The demographic profile of the region, as highlighted by Mustafa et
al. (2021) and Nansseu et al. (2021), underscores the necessity for tailored
interventions. These studies shed light on the challenges faced by women in
accessing family planning services, ranging from cultural beliefs to
socioeconomic factors. The Abbi Primary Health Care Centers act as a frontline
in overcoming these challenges, providing a platform for addressing the unique
needs of the community and ensuring that family planning services are
accessible and culturally sensitive (Mustafa et al., 2021; Nansseu et al.,
2021).
Research
conducted by Solanke (2018) further accentuates the importance of family
planning in urban Western Africa, emphasizing the drivers of unmet needs among
women of advanced reproductive age. While the demographic dynamics may differ,
the lessons drawn from such studies are relevant in informing the strategies
implemented by health care centers like those in Ndukwa West. By understanding
the factors influencing the adoption of family planning, health care providers
in Abbi Primary Health Care Centers can tailor their services to address the
specific needs and concerns of women in the region (Solanke, 2018; Mahadeen et
al., 2022).
The
studies conducted in different regions, such as rural areas of Pakistan
(Mustafa et al., 2021) and the Mbouda health district in Cameroon (Nansseu et
al., 2021), highlight the importance of assessing the knowledge, attitudes, and
practices surrounding family planning. The insights gained from these studies
can be instrumental in designing targeted awareness campaigns and educational
programs within Abbi Primary Health Care Centers. By addressing misconceptions
and fostering a better understanding of family planning methods, healthcare
providers can empower women of childbearing age to make informed decisions
about their reproductive health (Mustafa et al., 2021; Nansseu et al., 2021).
In
the rural setting of Mbalmayo District Hospital in Cameroon, Tolefac et al.
(2018) conducted research on the trends and patterns of family planning methods
used among women attending family planning clinics. Such studies provide
valuable information for health care practitioners in Abbi Primary Health Care
Centers, offering insights into the preferences and utilization patterns of
family planning methods. This knowledge can guide the provision of a diverse
range of contraceptive options, ensuring that women have access to methods that
align with their individual needs and preferences (Tolefac et al., 2018).
Additionally,
global perspectives, as presented by the United Nations (2020) and the World
Health Organization (2020), underscore the significance of family planning on a
larger scale. The global efforts to highlight family planning as a fundamental
aspect of reproductive health align with the local initiatives undertaken by
Abbi Primary Health Care Centers. By aligning with international frameworks and
guidelines, these health care centers can strengthen their commitment to
promoting family planning services and contribute to the broader goal of
achieving sustainable development (United Nations, 2020; World Health
Organization, 2020).
In
essence, family planning is an integral component of public health, with
profound implications for the well-being of individuals, families, and
societies. The Abbi Primary Health Care Centers in Ndukwa West Local Government
play a crucial role in addressing the unique reproductive health needs of women
of childbearing age in the region. Drawing insights from a diverse range of
studies, both locally and globally, can inform and enhance the strategies employed
by health care providers in Abbi. This approach ensures that family planning
services are not only accessible but also culturally sensitive, empowering
women to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and
contributing to the overall health and prosperity of the community.
1.2
Statement of Problem
The
Abbi Primary Health Care Centers in Ndukwa West Local Government have been
actively engaged in addressing reproductive health issues among women of
childbearing age. Despite the commendable efforts of these health care centers,
there exist critical gaps in understanding the impact of family planning on the
community. These gaps encompass various dimensions, including awareness,
accessibility, cultural considerations, and socioeconomic factors.
Firstly,
there is a need to comprehensively assess the awareness levels of family
planning among women of childbearing age in the region. The study by Anasel and
Mlinga (2022) underscores the importance of understanding the awareness
landscape, as it forms the foundation for informed decision-making. A knowledge
gap may exist in terms of the variety of family planning methods available and
the benefits associated with their utilization. Bridging this gap is essential
for empowering women to make choices aligned with their reproductive health
preferences.
Secondly,
while the Abbi Primary Health Care Centers play a pivotal role in addressing
reproductive health issues, the specific challenges hindering the utilization
of family planning services in the study area remain inadequately explored.
Studies by Mustafa et al. (2021) and Nansseu et al. (2021) in different regions
have highlighted the multifaceted nature of challenges, encompassing cultural,
socioeconomic, and logistical factors. Identifying and addressing these
challenges within the local context is essential for enhancing the effectiveness
of family planning programs.
Furthermore,
understanding the impact of family planning on the health and socio-economic
well-being of individuals, families, and society in Ndukwa West Local
Government is a critical gap that requires attention. Existing studies, such as
those conducted by Solanke (2018) and Mahadeen et al. (2022), provide insights
into the broader implications of family planning practices. However, the
specific nuances of this impact within the Abbi community remain understudied.
In
addressing these gaps, this research aims to contribute nuanced insights into
the local dynamics of family planning, enabling health care providers and
policymakers to design targeted interventions. By exploring these dimensions,
the study seeks to foster a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges
and opportunities in promoting effective family planning practices within the
Abbi Primary Health Care Centers and the broader Ndukwa West Local Government
community.
