HUMAN FACTORS AND QUALITY CONTROL IN NIGERIAN AVIATION MAINTENANCE: A STUDY OF ERROR PREVENTION AND COMPLIANCE CULTURE

ABSTRACT
This
empirical study examined the influence of human factors (independent variable)
on quality control (dependent variable) in Nigerian aviation maintenance,
focusing on error prevention and compliance culture as a case study. The
research addressed persistent human-induced errors compromising aircraft
safety, eroding regulatory compliance, and hindering operational efficiency
amid Nigeria's growing aviation sector post-deregulation. A quantitative survey
design utilized primary data from a structured five-point Likert-scale
questionnaire administered to 250 aviation maintenance technicians and
engineers across major Nigerian airports via stratified random sampling,
yielding 220 valid responses (88% response rate). Data analysis via SPSS
version 27 employed descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and Ordinary
Least Squares (OLS) multiple regression. Results revealed human factors account
for 35.2% of variance in quality control (R² = 0.352, F(3,216) = 42.567, p <
.001). Fatigue and stress demonstrated strong negative impact (β = -0.385, p
< .001; r = -.471, p < .01), inadequate training moderate effects (β =
-0.276, p < .001; r = -.342, p < .01), with combined influences
amplifying errors and weakening compliance culture. Findings align with Human
Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS), Swiss Cheese Model, and
empirical studies showing human errors contribute to 70-80% of aviation
incidents in developing contexts like Nigeria (Daramola, 2012; Shappell &
Wiegmann, 2001). The study concludes human factors significantly undermine
quality control, contributing localized quantitative evidence and policy
insights for Nigeria's aviation ecosystem. Recommendations include Nigerian
Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA)-mandated human factors training, enhanced
compliance audits, and fatigue management protocols. Future research should
incorporate longitudinal analysis and digital tool integrations.

Introduction
The aviation industry serves as a cornerstone of global
transportation, facilitating economic development, trade, tourism, and social

extended shifts), psychological (e.g., stress), and organizational elements
(e.g., inadequate supervision or resource allocation) play a central role in
error occurrence, prevention strategies, and the cultivation of a robust

Quality control in aviation maintenance entails
rigorous, systematic processes including inspections, audits, documentation,
and adherence to standards to verify aircraft airworthiness, detect defects
early, and minimize operational risks (Patankar & Taylor, 2004; Sanders
& McCormick, 1987). In Nigeria, these processes are governed by the NCAA,
aligning with ICAO standards, yet inconsistencies in enforcement, supply chain
issues (e.g., counterfeit parts), and workforce pressures often undermine
effectiveness (Habib & Turkoglu, 2020; Haruna & Taiwo, 2023). The
integration of human factors into quality control is indispensable, as errors
arising from fatigue, stress, communication breakdowns, or insufficient
training have been implicated in historical incidents, including
maintenance-related accidents and serious events (Daramola, 2012; Accident
Investigation Bureau Nigeria, various reports).
The significance of this study is underscored by aviation's
substantial economic contributions in Nigeria. Recent estimates indicate the
sector contributes approximately $2.5
billion annually to GDP (around 0.7% of total GDP), supporting over
217,000 jobs across direct, indirect, and induced impacts, while facilitating
tourism ($454 million GDP contribution) and broader trade (International Air
Transport Association [IATA], 2024; Daily Trust, 2026). Nationally, aviation
connects remote regions, boosts commerce, and drives socio-economic integration
in a country with vast geographic diversity. By examining human factors'
influence on quality control, error prevention, and compliance culture, this
research seeks to mitigate incident risks, enhance regulatory adherence to NCAA
and ICAO protocols (with Nigeria achieving improved safety oversight scores,
e.g., 75.3% on self-assessment tools in 2025; NCAA, 2025), and align with
global best practices for sustainable sector growth (ICAO, 2023; Federal
