IMPACT OF ORPHANAGE HOME ON THE CHILD PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of orphanage home on the child's personality development. Orphanage homes serve as a critical safety net for children who have lost parental care, yet the institutional environment itself, characterized in many contexts by limited resources, unstable caregiver relationships, and overcrowding, has repeatedly been linked to measurable effects on the psychological and social development of the children raised within it. This study found out the positive and negative impact of orphanage homes on the child's personality development, determined the effect of orphanage homes on child's personality development, and found out the morale and attitude of children raised in orphanage homes. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, with data collected from caregivers and children in selected orphanage homes using structured questionnaires, and analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings are expected to provide evidence-based insight for orphanage administrators, policy makers, and child welfare practitioners seeking to improve outcomes for children in institutional care.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

An orphanage home is a residential institution established to provide shelter, care, and upbringing for children who have lost one or both parents, or who have otherwise been abandoned or separated from parental care due to poverty, family breakdown, or social upheaval. In Nigerian society, where the extended family and community have traditionally shared responsibility for a child's upbringing, the orphanage home represents an institutional alternative that has grown alongside urbanization, family instability, and, in some regions, the effects of disease and conflict on family structures. While orphanage homes fulfil an essential protective function, a substantial body of research has raised concerns about how the institutional environment itself shapes the personality, self-esteem, and social development of the children raised within it.

Recent Nigerian research offers direct, empirically grounded evidence on this relationship. A 2023 study examining the socio-ecological drivers of vulnerability among children living in orphan homes, drawing on in-depth interviews with orphanage managers, caregivers, and social workers, found that threats to children's full nurturance and development operate across multiple interacting layers of the child's environment, from the immediate caregiving relationship through to broader institutional and policy conditions, and concluded that living in institutional care carries genuine risks to a child's growth and development that require deliberate, multi-level intervention (Onayemi & Hapunda, 2023). This finding is reinforced by a study examining the personality development of orphanage-raised primary school students in Akwa Ibom State, which found that self-image, self-worth, and physical wellbeing each significantly influenced the personality development of children raised in orphanage homes, underscoring that institutional care shapes not merely a child's material circumstances but their core sense of self (Ogbemudia, Wordu, Alasa, & Okwudili, 2022).

Beyond these individual psychological dimensions, research has also examined how orphanage life shapes children's broader social integration and moral orientation. A study on the social perception of orphanage homes and children's personality development found that the absence of biological parents affects a child's socialization process, and that the social environment surrounding a child in institutional care, including how the child is perceived and treated by the wider society, has a measurable effect on the child's moral development and attitude, concluding that the difficulties orphans face in socializing are often rooted as much in societal stigma as in the institutional environment itself (Nwokorie, 2022). Taken together, this literature confirms that orphanage care in Nigeria carries both protective benefits and documented risks to a child's personality development, self-esteem, and social attitude, risks shaped by the interaction of institutional conditions, caregiver relationships, and societal perception. It is against this background that this study examines the impact of orphanage home on the child's personality development.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While orphanage homes provide an essential protective function for children who have lost parental care, recent Nigerian research consistently documents measurable risks that institutional care poses to children's personality development, self-esteem, and social attitude, arising from factors such as limited resources, unstable caregiver relationships, overcrowding, and societal stigma (Onayemi & Hapunda, 2023; Ogbemudia, Wordu, Alasa, & Okwudili, 2022; Nwokorie, 2022). This raises important questions about the specific balance of positive and negative impacts orphanage homes have on the children within them, the precise effect of institutional care on personality development, and the morale and attitude that actually characterize children raised in this setting. Without a clear, evidence-based understanding of these dynamics, orphanage administrators and child welfare policy makers risk continuing to operate institutional care models without adequately addressing the specific factors known to affect children's psychological and social wellbeing. It is this gap that the present study seeks to address.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

1. Find out the positive and negative impact of orphanage home on the child's personality development.
2. Determine the effect of orphanage home on child's personality development.
3. Find out the morale and attitude of children raised in orphanage home.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What are the positive and negative impacts of orphanage home on the child's personality development?

3. What is the morale and attitude of children raised in orphanage home?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Ho1: Orphanage home has no significant effect on the personality development of the child.

Ho2: There is no significant relationship between orphanage home upbringing and the morale and attitude of children raised within it.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will benefit orphanage administrators and caregivers by providing evidence to guide improvements in institutional care practices that support healthy personality development. It will benefit policy makers and child welfare agencies, including the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, by informing standards and investment priorities for orphanage homes. It will benefit social workers and child psychologists working with institutionalized children, and will serve as a reference for future researchers examining child welfare and institutional care in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to examining the impact of orphanage home upbringing on the personality development, morale, and attitude of children raised in selected orphanage homes.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

Time and resource constraints limited the study to a selected sample of orphanage homes rather than a comprehensive national survey. Some child respondents may have found it difficult to fully articulate their psychological experiences, given their age and circumstances, which may have affected the depth of some responses.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Orphanage Home: A residential institution that provides shelter, care, and upbringing for children who have lost parental care or been otherwise separated from their families. Personality Development: The process through which an individual's characteristic patterns of thought, emotion, and behaviour form and evolve over time. Self-Esteem: An individual's overall subjective evaluation of their own worth. Morale: The confidence, enthusiasm, and discipline exhibited by an individual or group. Institutional Care: The provision of care for children within a residential institution, as distinct from family-based or foster care.
