Abstract
The study focused
on investigating the prevalence of malaria among pregnant women attending
primary healthcare centres in the Abbi community, as well as the effectiveness
of existing prevention strategies. A quantitative survey research design was
adopted, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire from a sample
of 120 respondents. SPSS27 was utilized to present and analyze the collected
data, with t-tests employed to test the hypotheses formulated. Findings
revealed a concerning prevalence of malaria among pregnant women in the study
area, with a majority of respondents either strongly agreeing or agreeing with
the statement. Additionally, the study identified various risk factors
associated with malaria infection among pregnant women, indicating a need for
targeted interventions. Moreover, while existing malaria prevention strategies
were perceived to be effective by a significant proportion of respondents,
there were still uncertainties and disagreements among some participants. In
conclusion, the study highlights the importance of addressing malaria among
pregnant women in the Abbi community through comprehensive prevention and
management strategies. Based on the findings, it is recommended that healthcare
providers enhance the accessibility and utilization of antenatal care services,
strengthen community health education programs, and continually monitor and
evaluate the effectiveness of existing malaria prevention measures. Overall,
the study contributes valuable insights into the malaria burden among pregnant
women in the Abbi community and provides a foundation for future research and
interventions aimed at improving maternal and child health outcomes in the
region.

INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background to the Study
Malaria
remains a significant global health concern, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa
where it poses a considerable burden on public health systems. The World Health
Organization (WHO) reports that malaria continues to be a leading cause of
morbidity and mortality in many endemic regions, with pregnant women being
among the most vulnerable populations (WHO, 2017). This vulnerability stems
from physiological changes that occur during pregnancy, which can make women
more susceptible to infection and increase the risk of severe complications if
infected (Iriemenam et al., 2021).
In
endemic regions like the Abbi community in Ndokwa West Local Government,
malaria presents a substantial threat to the health and well-being of pregnant
women and their unborn children. According to the Nigeria Malaria Indicator
Survey 2015 conducted by the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP),
malaria remains prevalent in Nigeria, including in rural communities like Abbi

al., 2021).
Efforts
to combat malaria among pregnant women in Abbi community must address not only
access to preventive measures such as insecticide-treated bed nets and
intermittent preventive treatment but also the knowledge gaps and
misconceptions that hinder effective prevention and control. Community-based
education and outreach programs can play a crucial role in improving awareness
and promoting appropriate preventive behaviors (Amusan et al., 2017; Singh et
al., 2022).
Additionally,
interventions aimed at addressing broader social determinants of health, such
as poverty and inadequate healthcare infrastructure, are essential for reducing

Statement of Problem
The
statement of the problem regarding malaria among pregnant women in the Abbi

pregnant women in this region continue to face significant risks of infection
and related complications. One primary gap lies in the inadequate knowledge and

Objectives of the Study
The
objectives of this study were to:
1. Investigate
the prevalence of malaria among pregnant women attending primary healthcare centres
in Abbi community.
2. Identify
the risk factors associated with malaria infection among pregnant women in the
study area.

the effectiveness of existing malaria prevention strategies in primary
healthcare centres for pregnant women in Abbi community.

lower malaria prevalence among pregnant women in primary healthcare centers.

Scope of the Study
This
study focused on pregnant women attending primary healthcare centers in Abbi
community, Ndokwa West Local Government. It assessed the prevalence of malaria,
identified associated risk factors, and evaluated the effectiveness of existing
prevention strategies. The study did not extend to other communities or
healthcare settings outside the specified scope.

Malaria:
A parasitic disease transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes,
characterized by symptoms such as fever, chills, and body aches.
