Abstract
The study focused
on investigating infection control practices in the labor ward of Asaba
Specialist Hospital. A quantitative survey research design was adopted to
gather data from a sample of 120 respondents using a structured questionnaire.
The questionnaire was designed to assess various aspects of infection control
practices, including hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, personal protective
equipment (PPE) usage, and adherence to protocols. The collected data were
analyzed using t-tests to test the hypotheses formulated. The results indicated
significant correlations between adherence to infection control protocols and
patient outcomes, as well as improved infection control practices leading to
reduced rates of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) among patients in the
labor ward. Additionally, the study found noticeable reductions in the
incidence of HAIs and improved maternal and neonatal health outcomes when
infection control measures were diligently followed. In conclusion, the
findings underscore the importance of stringent adherence to infection control
protocols in healthcare settings, particularly in labor wards, to enhance
patient safety and health outcomes. Based on the results, recommendations are
made for the implementation of robust infection control measures, including
regular hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, proper PPE usage, and respiratory
hygiene practices. These recommendations aim to mitigate the risk of HAIs and
improve overall patient care quality in labor and delivery settings.
