Abstract
In this study, a
quantitative survey research design was employed to investigate the
relationship between internet addiction, social anxiety, and loneliness among
undergraduate students at Lagos State University (LASU). A structured
questionnaire, comprising items designed on a 5-point Likert scale, was
utilized to gather data from a purposive sample of 120 respondents. The survey
instrument facilitated the collection of information related to the prevalence
of internet addiction, the presence of social anxiety, feelings of loneliness,
and the perceived connection between internet addiction and psychological
distress. The collected data were presented and analyzed using SPSS 27, a
widely recognized statistical software. Various statistical methods, including
descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and t-tests, were applied to
examine the research objectives and test the formulated hypotheses. The t-test,
in particular, was employed to assess the significance of the prevalence of
internet addiction, levels of social anxiety, the existence of a correlation
between social anxiety and internet addiction, and the predictive value of
loneliness on internet addiction among LASU undergraduates. The findings
revealed that a substantial portion of the undergraduate population at LASU
exhibited signs of internet addiction. Moreover, a statistically significant
relationship existed between social anxiety and internet addiction, suggesting
that higher levels of social anxiety were associated with greater internet addiction.
However, there was no significant difference between the levels of social
anxiety and loneliness within the student population compared to those in the
general population. Similarly, loneliness was not a significant predictor of
internet addiction among LASU undergraduates. In conclusion, this study
provided valuable insights into the complex interplay between internet
addiction, social anxiety, and loneliness among undergraduate students at LASU.
The findings underscore the importance of addressing internet addiction and its
potential psychological ramifications in the context of higher education
institutions. Based on the results, it is recommended that universities develop
and implement support services, awareness programs, and interventions to help
students manage their internet use more responsibly and promote their overall
well-being.

Introduction
In
an era characterized by rapid technological advancements, the internet has
emerged as a pivotal element in the lives of individuals worldwide. The
proliferation of internet usage has revolutionized the way we communicate,
work, and access information. It has significantly impacted the lives of
undergraduates, offering a multitude of opportunities and challenges. Among the
challenges that have emerged is the phenomenon of internet addiction,
particularly concerning its relationship with social anxiety and loneliness.
This chapter introduces the research topic, provides the background context for
the study, elucidates the statement of the problem, outlines the specific
objectives, and underscores the relevance of the research in the context of
undergraduates in Lagos State University.
1.1.
Background to the Study
The
internet, a revolutionary invention of the 20th century, has grown into an
indispensable tool for individuals across the globe. Its multifaceted
applications encompass academic research, social networking, entertainment, and
online shopping, to name a few (Guo et al., 2020). Undergraduates, in
particular, have increasingly incorporated the internet into their daily lives.
It facilitates academic research, connects them with peers and mentors, and
serves as an avenue for entertainment and information (Ibrahim, 2022). The
internet has undoubtedly transformed the way we live and learn, offering a
wealth of resources and opportunities at our fingertips.
However,
with the growing reliance on the internet, concerns have arisen regarding the
potential negative consequences of excessive and problematic internet use, a
condition commonly referred to as "internet addiction" (Anderson et
al., 2016). This phenomenon is characterized by an individual's compulsive and
excessive internet use, resulting in various adverse outcomes, such as impaired
academic performance, disrupted social relationships, and mental health issues
(Mei et al., 2016). Internet addiction can be particularly detrimental to
undergraduates, as it may interfere with their academic responsibilities and
overall well-being.
Social
anxiety, a psychological factor associated with internet addiction, is defined
as the persistent fear of social situations and the fear of being negatively
judged by others (Lee & Stapinski, 2012). This fear can drive individuals
to seek refuge online, where they often feel a heightened sense of anonymity
and reduced social pressure (Caplan, 2017). For undergraduates experiencing
social anxiety, the internet can provide a safe haven where they can interact
with others without the fear of face-to-face judgment. This may lead to
increased online activity as a coping mechanism.
Loneliness,
another significant psychological factor, is a pervasive feeling of social
isolation and a lack of meaningful connections (Breslau et al., 2015).
Loneliness is not uncommon among undergraduates, especially those who are far
from home and their support networks. Many individuals attempt to alleviate
their loneliness through online social interactions, such as social media and
chat platforms (Pierce, 2009). While these interactions may provide temporary
relief, excessive online engagement can potentially lead to internet addiction
as individuals become increasingly dependent on the virtual world for social
connection.
Lagos
State University (LASU) is a prominent institution of higher learning in
Nigeria, catering to a diverse population of undergraduates (Ilesanmi et al.,
2021). In this context, it is imperative to investigate the influence of social
anxiety and loneliness on internet addiction among LASU undergraduates.
Understanding these dynamics within the university's student population will
provide valuable insights that can inform interventions and strategies to
promote healthier internet use and overall well-being (Jarrar et al., 2022).
LASU,
like many universities, has a technologically advanced environment, with
students having easy access to the internet for both academic and recreational
purposes (Oluwatoyin, 2011). The prevalence of internet addiction among LASU
undergraduates is a pressing concern that needs to be addressed. By examining
the relationship between social anxiety and internet addiction, we can gain
insights into the role of anxiety in driving excessive internet use. This
knowledge can inform counseling services and interventions tailored to support
students dealing with social anxiety.
Furthermore,
loneliness is a pervasive issue that can affect undergraduates, particularly
those who are studying far from home. Online social interactions offer a way to
bridge the gap and alleviate loneliness (Esfandiari et al., 2013). However, if
these interactions become excessive and lead to internet addiction, it can
exacerbate the problem rather than solve it. Investigating the link between
loneliness and internet addiction at LASU will help the institution develop
strategies to promote healthy social interactions and mitigate loneliness among
students.
The
findings of this research at LASU may also contribute to the broader
understanding of internet addiction and its underlying causes. Social anxiety
and loneliness are not unique to LASU undergraduates but are experienced by
students worldwide. Therefore, the insights gained from this study can have
implications for universities and institutions globally, helping them develop
policies and support systems to address internet addiction issues.
1.2.
Statement of the Problem
The
escalating prevalence of internet addiction, particularly among young adults,
raises concerns due to its associated negative consequences (Anderson et al.,
2016). Internet addiction can lead to poor academic performance, compromised
mental health, and strained social relationships (Mei et al., 2016). Social
anxiety and loneliness are two psychological factors that may significantly
contribute to the development of internet addiction (Lee & Stapinski, 2012;
Breslau et al., 2015).
The
problem at the heart of this research is as follows: To what extent do social
anxiety and loneliness influence internet addiction among undergraduates in
Lagos State University? This question serves as the cornerstone of the study,
as it delves into the intricate relationship between these psychological
factors and internet addiction within the specific context of Lagos State
University.
Understanding
the relationship between these variables is vital for the development of
effective preventive and intervention strategies (Jarrar et al., 2022). It will
enable the university and relevant stakeholders to implement measures that can
help students manage their internet use more responsibly and foster their
mental well-being. By exploring the influence of social anxiety and loneliness
on internet addiction, this research aims to contribute to the development of
tailored interventions to address internet addiction issues among
undergraduates, ultimately enhancing their overall well-being.
1.3.
Purpose of the Study
This
research is designed with the following specific objectives:
1. To
investigate the extent and intensity of internet addiction among undergraduates
enrolled at Lagos State University.
2. To
evaluate the degrees of social anxiety and loneliness prevalent among the
student body.
3. To
scrutinize the possible connections between social anxiety, loneliness, and
internet addiction within the LASU undergraduate community.
4. To
ascertain the role of social anxiety and loneliness in predicting internet
addiction among LASU undergraduates.
1.4.
Relevance of the Study
The
significance of this study encompasses both academic and practical domains. In
terms of academic contribution, this research adds to the existing body of
knowledge concerning internet addiction, social anxiety, and loneliness, with a
specific focus on undergraduates. It provides an opportunity to investigate the
unique challenges faced by students at Lagos State University and contributes
to the academic literature in the fields of psychology, sociology, and
education.
From
a practical perspective, the findings from this research can inform university
administrators, counselors, and policymakers about the extent and nature of
internet addiction, social anxiety, and loneliness among undergraduates. Armed
with this knowledge, institutions can develop and implement targeted
interventions and support services to address these issues and promote the
overall well-being of students.
Moreover,
the study has direct implications for individual well-being. It equips students
with a better understanding of the relationship between social anxiety,
loneliness, and internet addiction. This knowledge empowers students to
recognize potential issues and take proactive steps to manage their online
behaviors, enhance their social skills, and seek appropriate support when
needed.
Lastly, the social and economic impact of internet addiction and its associated consequences is substantial. Identifying and addressing these issues early in the academic journey can help mitigate long-term challenges, such as decreased employability and strained interpersonal relationships. By shedding light on these interconnected factors, this research aims to contribute to the well-being of individuals and society as a whole.
