CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Drug abuse and addiction remain significant public health concerns globally, affecting individuals, families, and communities across various demographics (Al Nohair, 2021). Among the most vulnerable groups are university undergraduates, who often face unique pressures and challenges that may predispose them to substance misuse (Patrick et al., 2022). Understanding the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of drug abuse and addiction among undergraduates is crucial for developing effective prevention and intervention strategies (Al-Musa & Al-Montashri, 2020).

Research indicates that the prevalence of substance abuse among university undergraduates is concerning. Al Nohair (2021) found that smoking and its related behaviors and beliefs are prevalent among secondary school students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Additionally, Zaloudíková et al. (2022) highlighted the association between parental education and family status with children's cigarette smoking. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions addressing the specific risk factors and vulnerabilities present among this demographic.

Moreover, the influence of social factors, including family, peers, and societal norms, cannot be understated in shaping undergraduates' attitudes and behaviors towards drug abuse. Kelly et al. (2021) demonstrated the multilevel impact of parents, siblings, and peers on pre- and early-teen smoking. Similarly, Beaver et al. (2022) emphasized the role of low self-control and delinquent peers in contributing to substance use among Saudi Arabian youth. Such findings emphasize the importance of considering the broader social context when designing interventions aimed at reducing drug abuse among university students.

Furthermore, socioeconomic status (SES) has been identified as a significant determinant of substance use among young adults. Patrick et al. (2022) conducted a study comparing SES and substance use across different constructs and drugs, highlighting the complex interplay between socioeconomic factors and substance misuse. Addressing disparities in access to resources and opportunities may be crucial in preventing substance abuse among university undergraduates, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Additionally, the impact of parental behaviors, including alcoholism, on adolescents' substance use cannot be overlooked. Njoroge (2020) explored the influence of parental alcoholism on the academic performance of secondary school students in Kenya, underscoring the intergenerational transmission of substance abuse behaviors. Al-Jerani et al. (2017) also highlighted the prevalence of substance abuse among the Saudi population, indicating the need for comprehensive approaches that involve families in prevention efforts.

Furthermore, loneliness and social support play significant roles in shaping individuals' susceptibility to drug abuse and addiction. Lamis et al. (2020) found a correlation between loneliness and suicidal ideation in drug-using college students, highlighting the importance of addressing underlying mental health issues in substance abuse prevention efforts. Similarly, Lee and Goldstein (2022) emphasized the differential impact of various sources of social support on loneliness and stress among young adults, suggesting the potential protective role of supportive relationships.

Moreover, knowledge and attitudes towards substance abuse among young people influence their likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors. Haddad et al. (2020) investigated knowledge of substance abuse among high school students in Jordan, emphasizing the importance of education and awareness programs in shaping attitudes towards drug use. Martinotti et al. (2020) explored the use and knowledge of novel psychoactive substances among adolescents and young adults, highlighting the need for ongoing surveillance and education efforts to address emerging trends in substance abuse.

1.2 Statement of Problem

Despite the growing awareness of the importance of addressing drug abuse and addiction among university undergraduates, significant gaps remain in our understanding of this issue. While numerous studies have examined the prevalence and correlates of substance use among this population, there is a lack of comprehensive research that explores the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of drug abuse and addiction among university students in depth.

One key gap in the existing literature is the limited focus on specific demographic groups within the undergraduate population. While some studies have examined substance use among secondary school students (Al Nohair, 2021) and the influence of parental factors (Njoroge, 2020), there is a need for more research that considers the unique experiences and challenges faced by different subgroups of university students, such as first-generation students, international students, and those from marginalized communities.

Furthermore, there is a dearth of research that investigates the role of cultural and societal factors in shaping undergraduates' attitudes and behaviors towards drug abuse. While studies have explored substance use among Saudi Arabian youth (Beaver et al., 2022) and the prevalence of smoking in specific regions (Fida & Abdelmoneim, 2023), there is limited understanding of how cultural norms, religious beliefs, and social norms influence substance use among university students in diverse cultural contexts.

Moreover, existing research often lacks a longitudinal perspective, limiting our ability to understand the trajectories of drug use among university undergraduates over time. Longitudinal studies tracking students from their freshman year through graduation would provide valuable insights into the factors that contribute to the initiation, escalation, and cessation of substance use during this critical period of development.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

This study aimed to achieve three specific objectives:

1. To assess the level of knowledge regarding drug abuse and addiction among undergraduate students.

2. To explore the attitudes of undergraduate students toward drug abuse and addiction.

3. To examine the perceptions of undergraduate students regarding the prevalence and consequences of drug abuse and addiction.

1.4 Research Questions

The study addressed the following research questions:

1. What is the level of knowledge among undergraduate students regarding drug abuse and addiction?

2. What are the prevailing attitudes of undergraduate students toward drug abuse and addiction?

3. How do undergraduate students perceive the prevalence and consequences of drug abuse and addiction?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The study formulated the following hypotheses:

1. There is no significant difference in knowledge levels regarding drug abuse and addiction among undergraduate students from different academic disciplines.

2. Attitudes toward drug abuse and addiction does not significantly influence the likelihood of substance misuse among undergraduate students.

3. Perceptions of the prevalence and consequences of drug abuse and addiction are not associated with the likelihood of engaging in substance use among undergraduate students.

1.6 Significance of the Study

Understanding the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of drug abuse and addiction among university undergraduates holds significant importance for several reasons. Firstly, substance misuse among this demographic not only affects individual students but also has broader implications for their academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being. By gaining insights into the factors that contribute to substance use among undergraduates, policymakers, educators, and healthcare professionals can develop targeted interventions aimed at promoting healthier behaviors and reducing the negative consequences associated with drug abuse.

Secondly, addressing substance abuse among university students is crucial for promoting campus safety and fostering a conducive learning environment. Substance misuse can lead to a range of issues, including impaired judgment, risky behaviors, and interpersonal conflicts, all of which can disrupt the academic experience for both affected students and their peers. By understanding the underlying factors driving substance use among undergraduates, institutions can implement evidence-based prevention and harm reduction strategies to create safer and more supportive campus environments.

Thirdly, substance abuse among university students often represents a precursor to long-term addiction and substance use disorders. 1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focused on undergraduate students enrolled in a specific university within a defined geographical area. Data collection was conducted through surveys administered to a sample of undergraduate students across various academic disciplines. The study primarily examined the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of drug abuse and addiction among undergraduates, with a particular emphasis on understanding factors associated with substance misuse behaviors.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

To ensure clarity and consistency, the following terms are defined operationally within the context of this study:

Drug abuse: The misuse or excessive consumption of psychoactive substances, including illegal drugs or prescription medications, leading to adverse physical, psychological, or social consequences.

Addiction: A chronic, relapsing disorder characterized by compulsive drug-seeking and use despite harmful consequences, often accompanied by physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms.

Undergraduate students: Individuals enrolled in a bachelor's degree program at a tertiary educational institution.

Knowledge: The understanding or awareness of factual information related to drug abuse and addiction, including the effects of substances, risk factors, and harm reduction strategies.

Attitudes: The beliefs, opinions, or judgments held by individuals toward drug abuse and addiction, influencing their behaviors and decision-making processes.

Perceptions: The subjective interpretations or understandings of undergraduate students regarding the prevalence, causes, consequences, and social norms surrounding drug abuse and addiction.

Prevention: Strategies or interventions aimed at reducing the initiation and prevalence of drug abuse among undergraduate students through education, awareness campaigns, and policy implementation.

Intervention: Programs or initiatives designed to address drug abuse and addiction among undergraduate students, including treatment, counseling, and support services.
