INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Abortion complications remain a significant public health concern worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2022), unsafe abortion practices contribute significantly to maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly in regions where access to safe abortion services is limited or restricted. In Nigeria, where abortion laws are highly restrictive, many women resort to unsafe abortion methods, leading to various complications that often require urgent medical intervention. These complications include hemorrhage, infection, uterine perforation, and sepsis (Olukoya, 2004).

Nurses play a crucial role in the management of abortion complications, serving as frontline healthcare providers attending to women experiencing post-abortion complications. Their role encompasses clinical assessment, treatment administration, and patient counseling. However, the effectiveness of their management largely depends on their knowledge and skills in this area. Research by Aziken et al. (2023) highlights the importance of nurses' understanding of emergency contraception, which is often provided as part of post-abortion care to prevent unintended pregnancies.

Uromi, located in Edo State, Nigeria, houses Central Hospital Uromi, a major healthcare facility in the region. Given the prevalence of abortion complications and the central role nurses play in managing them, understanding the knowledge of effective management of these complications among nurses in Central Hospital Uromi is imperative for improving the quality of care provided to women in need. 1.3 Objectives of the Study

The study aimed to achieve the following objectives:

1. To assess the knowledge level of nurses regarding the effective management of abortion complications in Central Hospital Uromi, Edo State.

2. To identify any gaps or deficiencies in nurses' knowledge concerning the management of abortion complications.

3. To recommend strategies for improving nurses' knowledge and skills in managing abortion complications based on the findings of the study.

The study addressed the following research questions:

1. What is the level of knowledge among nurses in Central Hospital Uromi regarding the effective management of abortion complications?

2. What specific areas of abortion complication management do nurses exhibit the most deficiencies?

3. What strategies can be recommended to enhance nurses' knowledge and skills in managing abortion complications?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The study formulated the following hypotheses:

1. There is no significant relationship between nurses' level of experience and their knowledge of managing abortion complications.

2. Training and educational programs have no positive impact on nurses' knowledge and skills in managing abortion complications.

The anticipated findings of this study are poised to make substantial contributions to the current understanding of managing abortion complications, especially concerning nurses operating within Nigerian healthcare contexts. The study did not delve into the broader societal or legal aspects of abortion but instead concentrated on the clinical competencies required for providing optimal care to women experiencing post-abortion complications.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Abortion Complications: Any adverse health outcomes resulting from an incomplete, unsafe, or spontaneous abortion, including but not limited to hemorrhage, infection, and uterine perforation.

Nurses: Healthcare professionals with formal education and training in nursing who are responsible for providing direct patient care, including the management of abortion complications.

Central Hospital Uromi: A healthcare facility located in Uromi, Edo State, Nigeria, serving as a major referral center in the region.

Knowledge Level: The degree of understanding and familiarity that nurses possess regarding the effective management of abortion complications, assessed through objective measures such as exams or surveys.

Training and Educational Programs: Formal initiatives aimed at enhancing nurses' knowledge and skills related to abortion complication management, including workshops, seminars, and continuing education courses.

Morbidity: The prevalence of illness or disease within a population, often measured by the number of individuals affected by abortion complications requiring medical attention.
