Abstract
This
study explores the level of understanding of maternal nutrition among pregnant
women attending antenatal clinics using a qualitative research approach. Data
were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions
involving between 20 and 25 participants. The study examined participants'
knowledge, perceptions, beliefs, and nutritional practices during pregnancy,
allowing for a comprehensive understanding of their experiences and viewpoints.
The findings revealed varying levels of nutritional knowledge among
participants, with several misconceptions identified. Common misunderstandings
included the belief that pregnant women must "eat for two" and the
avoidance of certain foods due to cultural traditions and beliefs. The study
also found that women obtained nutritional information from multiple sources,
including healthcare professionals, family members, and online platforms,
highlighting the importance of providing accurate and evidence-based nutrition
education. Furthermore, the results demonstrated a clear connection between
nutritional knowledge and dietary behavior, indicating that women with better
understanding of maternal nutrition were more likely to make healthier food
choices during pregnancy. Based on these findings, the study recommends the
implementation of targeted nutrition education programmes and the dissemination
of reliable information through various communication channels. Strengthening
maternal nutrition education will contribute to improved prenatal care and
better health outcomes for both mothers and their babies.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Pregnancy
is a unique and important stage in a woman's life that requires increased
nutritional support to ensure the health of both the mother and the developing
fetus. Proper nutrition during pregnancy contributes significantly to healthy
fetal growth, appropriate birth weight, and the prevention of pregnancy-related
complications and congenital abnormalities (Bej, 2020). As the nutritional
demands of pregnancy increase, women need adequate amounts of essential
nutrients to meet both maternal and fetal requirements. Despite the widespread
availability of information on maternal nutrition, many pregnant women
attending antenatal clinics still have inadequate knowledge of the nutritional
requirements necessary for a healthy pregnancy.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although
studies have established a link between maternal nutritional knowledge and
dietary behavior, there remains a need for further investigation across
different populations and settings (Patel et al., 2020). A better understanding
of this relationship can support the development of interventions aimed at
improving dietary practices and reducing adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes
(Sanjel et al., 2021).
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The
main objective of this study is to assess the understanding of maternal
nutrition among women attending antenatal clinics.
The
specific objectives are to:

1.7 Scope of the Study
This
study is limited to women attending antenatal clinics within the selected study
area. It focuses specifically on assessing their knowledge of nutritional
requirements during pregnancy, identifying misconceptions related to maternal
nutrition, examining sources of nutritional information, and evaluating the
relationship between nutritional knowledge and dietary practices.
The
study concentrates on key nutritional concepts, including macronutrients,
micronutrients, and dietary recommendations for pregnant women. Other factors
that may influence dietary behavior, such as cultural practices, household
income, and social support systems, are beyond the scope of this research.

Nutritional
