INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Ageing is a universal phenomenon that presents diverse challenges across societies. In Nigeria, like many other countries, the population is experiencing a significant demographic shift towards older adulthood. This demographic change is accompanied by various social, economic, and health implications, requiring a nuanced understanding of how older adults are perceived within their communities. In Ondo State, Nigeria, the perception of aging among its residents plays a crucial role in shaping the quality of life and well-being of older adults (Fields et al., 2014). Understanding these perceptions is essential for developing effective policies and interventions to support the aging population.

Negative stereotypes and misconceptions about aging can lead to discrimination, marginalization, and inadequate support for older adults, ultimately affecting their overall quality of life (Cohen et al., 2018). Therefore, it is imperative to explore the prevailing perceptions of aging in Ondo State to identify potential challenges and opportunities for improvement. Studies have shown that combatting social isolation and increasing social participation of older adults through the use of technology can be effective strategies (Baker et al., 2018). However, the acceptance of information and communication technology by the elderly people living in Ondo State may vary, highlighting the need for targeted interventions (Basakha et al., 2013).

The specific objectives of this study were to investigate the prevailing perceptions of aging among the people of Ondo State, examine the factors influencing these perceptions of aging, and assess the implications of these perceptions on the well-being and social inclusion of older adults (Kim et al., 2022). Research has shown that hospital nurses' empathy and moral sensitivity toward elderly care can significantly impact the quality of care provided to older adults (Kim et al., 2022). Therefore, understanding the factors influencing perceptions of aging among healthcare professionals in Ondo State is essential for enhancing the quality of care for older adults.

This study holds several implications for policy, practice, and research. By understanding the perceptions of aging among the people of Ondo State, policymakers can develop targeted interventions to address negative stereotypes and promote positive attitudes towards older adults (Orellana et al., 2020). Practitioners working with older adults can also tailor their services to better meet the needs of this population (Park et al., 2018). Furthermore, this study contributes to the existing body of literature on aging by providing insights into the unique socio-cultural context of Ondo State (Fields et al., 2014).

This study focused on the perceptions of aging among the residents of Ondo State, Nigeria. It examined the attitudes, beliefs, and stereotypes surrounding aging within the community (Ong-Artborirak & Seangpraw, 2019). The study also explored the factors influencing these perceptions and their implications for the well-being and social inclusion of older adults. However, it did not delve into specific policy interventions or programs targeting older adults in Ondo State (Valenzuela et al., 2018).

In essence, understanding the perceptions of aging among the people of Ondo State, Nigeria, is crucial for developing effective policies and interventions to support the aging population. Negative stereotypes and misconceptions about aging can lead to discrimination and inadequate support for older adults. Therefore, targeted interventions aimed at promoting positive attitudes towards aging are needed to enhance the well-being and social inclusion of older adults in Ondo State (Tsertsidis et al., 2019).

1.2 Statement of Problem

Aging is a complex and multifaceted process that affects individuals and societies worldwide. As populations age, there are significant social, economic, and health implications that require careful consideration and proactive responses. In Nigeria, like many other countries, demographic trends indicate a notable shift towards older adulthood, posing challenges and opportunities for individuals, communities, and policymakers alike (Fields et al., 2014). This demographic transition underscores the importance of understanding how older adults are perceived within their communities, as these perceptions can profoundly impact their quality of life and well-being.

In Ondo State, Nigeria, the perception of aging among its residents plays a crucial role in shaping the experiences of older adults. Negative stereotypes and misconceptions about aging can lead to discrimination, social isolation, and barriers to accessing essential services (Cohen et al., 2018). Therefore, it is imperative to explore the prevailing perceptions of aging in Ondo State to identify potential challenges and develop targeted interventions to address them. By understanding these perceptions, policymakers and practitioners can work towards promoting positive attitudes towards aging and creating age-friendly environments that support the needs and aspirations of older adults.

The objectives of this study are threefold: first, to investigate the prevailing perceptions of aging among the people of Ondo State; second, to examine the factors influencing these perceptions; and third, to assess the implications of these perceptions on the well-being and social inclusion of older adults. Previous research has highlighted the importance of understanding the socio-cultural context in shaping perceptions of aging (Ong-Artborirak & Seangpraw, 2019). Factors such as cultural norms, beliefs, and traditions can significantly influence how aging is perceived and experienced within communities.

Furthermore, research has shown that interventions aimed at promoting positive attitudes towards aging can have significant benefits for older adults' well-being and social inclusion (Baker et al., 2018). For example, programs that combat social isolation and increase social participation among older adults have been shown to improve their quality of life (Baker et al., 2018). Understanding the factors that facilitate or hinder the acceptance of such interventions among older adults in Ondo State is essential for their effective implementation and sustainability.

Hence, this study seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the perceptions of aging in Ondo State, Nigeria, and their implications for the well-being and social inclusion of older adults. By identifying the factors that shape these perceptions and assessing their impact, this research aims to inform the development of targeted interventions and policies that promote positive attitudes towards aging and support the needs of older adults in Ondo State and beyond.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of this study were:

1. To investigate the prevailing perceptions of aging among the people of Ondo State.

2. To examine the factors influencing these perceptions of aging.

3. To assess the implications of these perceptions on the well-being and social inclusion of older adults in Ondo State.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions were investigated:

1. What are the prevailing perceptions of ageing among the people of Ondo State?

2. What factors contribute to these perceptions of ageing?

3. How do these perceptions impact the well-being and social inclusion of older adults in Ondo State?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The following hypotheses were investigated:

Null Hypotheses(H₀):

1. There is no significant relationship between socio-cultural factors and the perception of ageing in Ondo State.

2. Negative perceptions of aging are not associated with lower levels of social support for older adults in Ondo State.

3. Interventions aimed at changing perceptions of aging can not positively impact the well-being of older adults in Ondo State.

Alternative Hypotheses(H₁):

1. There is a significant relationship between socio-cultural factors and the perception of ageing in Ondo State.

2. Negative perceptions of aging are associated with lower levels of social support for older adults in Ondo State.

3. Interventions aimed at changing perceptions of aging can positively impact the well-being of older adults in Ondo State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study carries significant implications for policy, practice, and research concerning aging perceptions among the residents of Ondo State, Nigeria. Understanding the prevailing attitudes towards aging can guide policymakers in developing targeted interventions aimed at countering negative stereotypes and fostering positive perceptions of older adults within the community. By addressing misconceptions and promoting inclusive attitudes, policymakers can create environments that support the well-being and social inclusion of older adults.

Moreover, practitioners working directly with older adults can leverage insights from this study to tailor their services and interventions to better align with the needs and preferences of this population. By recognizing and addressing the unique challenges faced by older adults in Ondo State, practitioners can enhance the effectiveness and relevance of their support programs. This tailored approach can lead to more meaningful and impactful interactions with older adults, ultimately improving their quality of life and overall well-being.

Additionally, this study contributes valuable insights to the existing body of literature on aging by offering a nuanced understanding of the socio-cultural context specific to Ondo State. By exploring the perceptions of aging within this distinct cultural landscape, the study enriches the understanding of how aging is perceived and experienced in different contexts. These insights can inform future research endeavors focused on aging and contribute to the development of more culturally sensitive and contextually relevant interventions and policies.

Overall, this study not only provides practical implications for policymakers and practitioners but also enriches the scholarly discourse on aging by shedding light on the unique socio-cultural dynamics at play in Ondo State, Nigeria. By addressing misconceptions, tailoring services, and contributing to the academic understanding of aging perceptions, this study aims to foster more inclusive and supportive environments for older adults, both in Ondo State and beyond.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focused on the perceptions of aging among the residents of Ondo State, Nigeria. It examined the attitudes, beliefs, and stereotypes surrounding aging within the community. The study also explored the factors influencing these perceptions and their implications for the well-being and social inclusion of older adults. However, it did not delve into specific policy interventions or programs targeting older adults in Ondo State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Aging: The process of growing older, including biological, psychological, and social changes associated with advancing age.

Perception: The way individuals interpret and make sense of the world around them, including their attitudes, beliefs, and stereotypes.

Older Adults: Individuals typically aged 60 years and above, as defined by the World Health Organization.

Socio-cultural Factors: The social and cultural influences that shape individuals' perceptions and behaviors, including norms, values, and traditions.

Well-being: A multidimensional concept encompassing physical, mental, and social aspects of health and life satisfaction.

Social Inclusion: The process of ensuring that all individuals, regardless of age, gender, or background, have equal access to opportunities, resources, and participation in society.

Negative Stereotypes: Prejudiced beliefs or assumptions about a particular group, such as older adults, which may contribute to discrimination and inequality.

Interventions: Programs, policies, or actions designed to address specific issues or challenges, such as changing perceptions of aging or promoting the well-being of older adults.
