Abstract
This quantitative
survey research aimed to investigate domestic violence trends and patterns
against women aged 25-45 in Ohafia Local Government Area (LGA). A structured
questionnaire was developed, and data were collected from a sample of 120
respondents using a convenient sampling technique. The study adopted SPSS27 for
data presentation and analysis. The research design facilitated the exploration
of historical trends, psychological and physical consequences, and the
effectiveness of support systems in mitigating domestic violence. To test the
stated hypotheses, t-tests were employed with an assumed mean of 0 and a
critical table value of 2.92 at a 5% level of significance. The findings from
Table 4.1 to 4.4 revealed significant associations between historical trends of
domestic violence and its prevalence against women aged 25-45 in Ohafia LGA.
Additionally, women in this age group who experienced domestic violence were
found to be more likely to suffer long-term psychological and physical
consequences. The effectiveness of existing support systems significantly
influenced the reduction of domestic violence. In conclusion, the study
contributes valuable insights into the prevalence, consequences, and support
systems related to domestic violence in Ohafia LGA. These findings emphasize
the need for targeted interventions and improved support mechanisms.
Recommendations include community-based awareness programs and the enhancement
of existing support structures. However, it is essential to acknowledge limitations,
such as potential bias in self-reported data and the cross-sectional nature of
the study. Future research should address these limitations for a more
comprehensive understanding of domestic violence in Ohafia LGA.

ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Domestic
violence, a pervasive global issue, transcends cultural, socio-economic, and
geographical boundaries, with profound implications for women aged 25-45 who
navigate critical phases in their lives, encompassing career, family, and
personal development (Heise, 2011; Kishor & Johnson, 2004). This study
zooms into Ohafia Local Government Area (LGA), situated in [provide geographic
details], to unravel the unique dynamics of domestic violence within this
community.
Ohafia
LGA serves as a compelling backdrop for investigating the influence of domestic
violence, with the need to understand the local context given the impact of
cultural, economic, and social factors on women's experiences within this age
group (Heise, 2011; Koenig et al., 2003). The prevalence of domestic violence
in Ohafia LGA necessitates a comprehensive exploration of its consequences on
the targeted demographic.
In
recent years, scholars have emphasized the importance of recognizing the
distinct challenges faced by women aged 25-45, a demographic navigating the
intersectionality of various life domains (Heise, 2011; Mason, 1986). This age
group often grapples with the pursuit of career goals, fulfilling familial
responsibilities, and achieving personal development milestones. However, the
shadow of domestic violence can impede progress and perpetuate a cycle of harm,
hindering the holistic development of women in Ohafia LGA.
The
cultural nuances of Ohafia LGA contribute to the complexity of domestic
violence dynamics. Cultural norms and expectations may either exacerbate or
mitigate the prevalence of such violence (Heise, 2011; Rahman et al., 2021). In
communities where patriarchal values are deeply ingrained, women may face
higher risks of intimate partner violence (Koenig et al., 2003). Understanding
these cultural intricacies is crucial for developing interventions that are
culturally sensitive and effective in addressing the specific needs of women in
this age group.
Economic
factors also play a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of domestic violence.
Women's economic empowerment has been identified as a protective factor against
intimate partner violence (Malhotra et al., 2022). In Ohafia LGA, where
economic conditions may vary, exploring the relationship between financial
independence and vulnerability to domestic violence becomes imperative (Gage
& Thomas, 2017). Economic interventions aimed at empowering women
economically can serve as a catalyst for breaking the cycle of violence.
Social
structures within Ohafia LGA, including community support systems and access to
resources, influence the experiences of women facing domestic violence
(Jejeebhoy, 1998; Antai, 2011). Strengthening social networks and ensuring that
women have access to support services can mitigate the adverse effects of
violence. Additionally, community-based initiatives that challenge traditional
gender roles and promote gender equity contribute to creating an environment
where domestic violence is less tolerated (Heise, 2011; Gage & Thomas,
2017).
The
consequences of domestic violence on the targeted demographic in Ohafia LGA are
far-reaching. Beyond the immediate physical and psychological trauma, women
aged 25-45 may experience disruptions in their educational and professional
pursuits (Heise, 2011; Kishor & Johnson, 2004). The cycle of violence can
impede their ability to reach their full potential, perpetuating a cycle of
disempowerment that extends to future generations.
Efforts
to address domestic violence in Ohafia LGA should be multifaceted, encompassing
legal, educational, and community-based interventions (Oyediran &
Feyisetan, 2017). Strengthening legal frameworks to protect victims and hold
perpetrators accountable is crucial. Educational programs that promote gender
equality and challenge stereotypes can contribute to changing societal
attitudes and norms (Heise, 2011; Antai, 2011). Community engagement
initiatives can facilitate dialogue, raise awareness, and foster a supportive
environment for survivors.
1.2
Statement of Problem
The
prevalence of domestic violence in Ohafia Local Government Area (LGA) raises
significant concerns about the well-being and development of women aged 25-45
within this community. Despite global efforts to address domestic violence, its
specific impact on women in this age group remains underexplored, particularly
in the context of Ohafia LGA. The existing literature highlights the critical
phase of life that women aged 25-45 navigate, encompassing career pursuits,
familial responsibilities, and personal development (Heise, 2011; Mason, 1986).
However, the shadow of domestic violence looms large, hindering their holistic
development.
Cultural
factors, deeply embedded in the fabric of Ohafia LGA, contribute to the
complexity of the issue. Cultural norms and expectations may either exacerbate
or mitigate the prevalence of domestic violence, necessitating an in-depth
exploration to inform targeted interventions (Heise, 2011; Rahman et al.,
2021). Economic conditions within the LGA also play a crucial role, with
potential variations influencing the vulnerability of women to intimate partner
violence (Gage & Thomas, 2017). The impact of social structures, including
community support systems and access to resources, further shapes the
experiences of women facing domestic violence in this particular community
(Jejeebhoy, 1998; Antai, 2011).
Despite
the recognition of these contributing factors, a gap exists in understanding
the specific dynamics and consequences of domestic violence for women aged
25-45 in Ohafia LGA. This gap hinders the development of targeted and effective
interventions that address the unique challenges faced by women in this age
group within the local context. Therefore, the statement of the problem
underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive investigation into the
influence of domestic violence on women aged 25-45 in Ohafia LGA, aiming to
fill the existing research gap and inform evidence-based interventions tailored
to the specific dynamics of this community.
