CHAPTER ONE

Abstract

This study focused on evaluating the usability and effectiveness of voice-based email systems and voice recognition technology for visually impaired users. A quantitative survey research design was adopted to gather insights from a sample of 120 respondents, who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was designed to collect data on various aspects related to the use of voice-based email systems and voice recognition technology among visually impaired individuals. The data collected were analyzed using SPSS27, allowing for a systematic presentation and examination of key variables. In analyzing the data, a one-sample t-test was employed to test several hypotheses related to the study objectives. The test results indicated significant improvements in the usability of voice-based email systems, as well as the accuracy of voice recognition technology in transcribing and interpreting email content for visually impaired users. Additionally, visually impaired users reported higher levels of satisfaction and improved communication efficiency with the implementation of voice-based email systems. These findings contribute to a better understanding of how technological innovations can positively impact the communication experiences of visually impaired individuals. Based on the results, the study concluded that voice-based email systems and voice recognition technology hold considerable promise in enhancing accessibility and communication efficiency for visually impaired users. The study recommends the continued development and integration of such technologies, with a focus on addressing privacy and security concerns raised by users. Furthermore, ongoing research and collaboration between technology developers and user communities are crucial to ensuring that these innovations meet the diverse needs and preferences of visually impaired individuals. Implementing user-centered design principles and conducting regular usability assessments can further optimize the usability and effectiveness of voice-based technologies for the visually impaired population.

INTRODUCTION

3. Assessed the overall user satisfaction and impact on communication efficiency with the implementation of a voice-based email system for visually impaired individuals.

The following research questions were asked:

1. How does the usability of voice-based email systems compare to traditional text-based email interfaces for visually impaired users?

2. To what extent can voice recognition technology accurately transcribe and interpret email content for visually impaired individuals?

The following hypotheses were tested:
